Members D Aussie
no. good tone primarily comes from you. your fingers, your head and your heart. however, to get a tube sound, you need a tube preamp (or a good sim.. line6 or tech 21) flame on, toob heads

Members BlackBelt
Great tone is subjective. For me, tubes give me the sound that I want (ampeg SVPCL preamp). My preamp allows me to hit 'the brown note'.I prefer the tone of the tubes over anything else, but I'm picky. I've heard great sounding bass amps live that didn't have tubes.Just depends on what you want.

My bass has TWO of those. I get twice as much tone.
Members Thumper
Nope. Some prefer tubes, some prefer solid state. It's a matter of individual taste and application.
