Yup, I sold the beast (Peavey Classic 400)

I'm sure I'll miss it, it was a truly outrageous bass head... but WAY more power then I've ever needed. I spent the early 90s making a living at bass with an AMP BH-250 and a pair of Bag End cabs... well now I have a single Bag End cab with 2x12" and I've just bought a recently refurbed AMP BH-250 off a guy on TB.

I'll be back with tubes soon... I've got a 30ish watt recording head coming soon and a 100 watt Tweed Twin from Kindness planned when he can fit it into his schedule :thu:

FWIW: here are clips of a live rehearsal circa 1992 of my old AMP + BE rig

(the guitarist grew the {censored} that killed Elvis... and we were quite toasty that day. We were having trouble standing / being conscious  )

FYI: the AMP BH-250 is the red headed step brother to the rest of the AMP line... top dog being the BH-420 which spawned the Thunderfunk line of amps (Dave Funk bought the design from Gibson who bought it from AMP as they went under). The Designers of the AMP line went on to start new companies like SWR and Eden... and they came from the world of the Acoustic Corp in the 70s.

I have a tube in the preamp of my GBE600, but I don't use it. :) For bass, I generally prefer solid state.

For guitar, I have an Orange Tiny Terror tube head that I run through an Avatar 2x12 and mic up with a Shinybox ribbon mic into a Groove Tubes "The Brick" tube mic preamp. :D I like tubes on guitar. On bass, not so much.

I like tubes for bass and guitar.... but I also like solid state... actually just like good amps :)

I was talking dollars with my guy on the inside last week. He's going to make some calls this week and get all the pricing info for you. You won't be without tubes for long.
;)

:thu: cool cool

I thought there was nothing more "James Hart" than Peavey tubes & cabs followed closely by an affinity for bees.

Sure I own 1 Bee.... but 2 Benaventes (ok, I plan on equaling that up ;) )

Also I am an Artist Endorser for Bag End... I bought my first in 1992 :thu:

The Peavey cabs are cool as heck (as is the C400)... but way too over kill for my needs.

HA! He's awake and posting at 3 AM because he can't sleep, knowing he's sold his Peavey.

I seriously believe my huge old dinosaur Fender tube head is as clean, clear, and musical as any solid state amp I've owned. Well, more musical, really. Granted I haven't owned a $58,586 SuperUltra Wondergizmo Amp, made in Bavaria by Elves, so I'm not claiming it's the most hi-fi thing there is, but for me it does the trick.

I wish! I'm at the office... actually trying to get an optical path of an OC3 tested with a carrier right now. I've been here since 8pm and not splitting until 7am!

huh?

I've been bugging Kindness since last year on this
:thu:

I posted a thread kinda detailing the idea last month since I knew it was getting close

Nah, knew it was coming and I wish I knew what I wanted in a tube amp so I could have him build me something. Oh well, I know yours will come out superb!

I'd really like to find a deal on an AlphaBass head - I've come to the conclusion that I *probably* don't need more than that, based on what I'm currently gigging with:

I played a gig tonight with my T-Max on top of a 210TVX and a 410TVX(both 4 ohms), and started out at "4" on my Pre, and approx. "1 and 1/4" on my Post - and had to turn down to "1" on the Post for an appropriate stage volume... We're playing modern rock and metal, our drummer is a pounder, and the guitarist was using a Mesa Road King thru a Peavey 412 cab - and I was just fine at "1"... So, obviously I don't need 550 watts of SS amp - probably could get by with half that, and less than that with a tuber, more than likely...

I'd probably still keep my T-Max's - 'cause I like them - but I would like an all-tube head for some variety, as well...

tubes don't color the sound... the amp design does.

Without getting into an Audiophile BS debate, High quality tube amplification can produce some of the most best listening.

Here is an example

I guess I meant in the traditional, semi-"Ampeg"/"Fender" sense. The "warmth" and all of that jazz... It just serves to not let me hear my intruments, in my opinion/experience. :idk: I gather the meaning on your end, though. :)

Keep your eyes on NYC craigslist. They pop up from time to time. I remember one for around $125 in Westchester a while back.

Thanks for the tip, but I think I'd be a bit leery of buying a tube amp sight unseen - unless it was from, or checked out by someone I know, or with references... I keep hoping one will pop up on Daddy's, or Guitar Center's used gear pages - then, I'll have it shipped in with minimal to no risk...

I hear that. I figured the 'cuse was close enough to NYC, especially for a killer deal. Then again, gas is a bit pricey these days.

NYC is a 4 hour drive from the 'cuse - gas, plus tolls would add a bit to the price tag... Plus, I hate going to the city, honestly - although maybe if the right deal popped up, I might be swayed otherwise... From what I hear, shipping a tube head *can* be an adventure - especially given the careless attitudes of the typical carrier these days...
