choosing a cab..

I'm going to buy a cab this weekend.. I'm pretty limited by space (and cash!).. I don't need masses of volume..

Its pretty much either a 2X10 (with a tweeter) or a 1X15.. I know theoretically you should have both, but a 'compact' cab is what I'm after (hence not wanting a 4X10).

I'm leaning towards the 2X10 (turned on its side takes up very little room..)

what say you experts..

I say you play thru as many different configurations as you can to narrow it down.

Should I assume this is to play with a rock type band? I would get as high a quality 1x15 as possible. What head are you trying to match it to? Make sure you bring it and your bass with you when testing cabs.

Letting us know your budget and details of your playing situation would help tremendously.

We say that without specifics on the brand and model, any 2x10 vs. 1x15 comparison is baseless.

The two cabs I'm looking at are..

210

Power Handling 350W continuous, 700W programme

Speaker Configuration 2 x 10" + HF tweeter

Frequency Response 75Hz - 20kHz

Impedance 8 Ohms

SPL 102dB 1W @ 1m

H x W x D (mm) 474 x 610 x 420

Weight (kg) 28

15

Power Handling 300W continuous, 600W programme

Speaker Configuration 1 x 15"

Frequency Response 37Hz - 2kHz

Impedance 8 Ohms

SPL 98dB 1W@1m

H x W x D (mm) 661 x 610 x 420

Weight (kg) 33

Mini15 (which I think is more of an extension cab?)

Power Handling 300W continuous, 600W programme

Speaker Configuration 1 x 15"

Frequency Response 41Hz - 4kHz

Impedance 8 Ohms

SPL 94dB 1W@1m

H x W x D (mm) 474 x 610 x 420

Weight (kg) 28

I dunno, are any of these cabs even usable for stand alone or are they intended to be combined.. Its sort of confusing for me, first bass amp gear I've bought..

Try out as many as possible man. With your amp and bass, choose the one you like the best, even if it is out of you budget. It won't take you long to save a little more.

Budget is around AUD$600-700 is that right?

EDIT: Check this out

Its budget and space.. I'm trying to avoid having a 4X10 or having to lug around 2 cabs..

The two cabs I'm looking at are..

210

Power Handling 350W continuous, 700W programme = worthless numbers

Speaker Configuration 2 x 10" + HF tweeter

Frequency Response 75Hz - 20kHz = worthless numbers

Impedance 8 Ohms

SPL 102dB 1W @ 1m = worthless numbers

H x W x D (mm) 474 x 610 x 420

Weight (kg) 28

15

Power Handling 300W continuous, 600W programme = worthless numbers

Speaker Configuration 1 x 15"

Frequency Response 37Hz - 2kHz = worthless numbers

Impedance 8 Ohms

SPL 98dB 1W@1m = worthless numbers

H x W x D (mm) 661 x 610 x 420

Weight (kg) 33

Mini15 (which I think is more of an extension cab?)

Power Handling 300W continuous, 600W programme = worthless numbers

Speaker Configuration 1 x 15"

Frequency Response 41Hz - 4kHz = worthless numbers

H x W x D (mm) 474 x 610 x 420

Weight (kg) 28

You can very quickly see that the Mini15 is just a 15" driver inside the 2x10 box. That box is too small for the 15. The normal 15 looks like the proper box size for a 15. That means that even if the driver that's in it is awful, you could upgrade it down the road. Given the dearth of valuable information given, I'd simply try both the 2x10 and the 15 and see which you like the most. :D

That Trace-Elliot 410 is probably only around the same size as the Ashdown 115, and it wouldn't be much heavier.

Uh.. thats strange.. made me look up the ashdown site.. the 410 and the 115 are the same size and weight as well..

The 210 though.. about 8kg lighter and a bit over half the size..

Thinking a 210 for me is gonna be the go.. smaller, lighter..

As far as personal preference, for a "compact" cab, I prefer a 2x10. I seem to get more out of them, not volume-wise, but range of tones at low volumes.
:idk:

Then I walk into Kindness's house and play that damn LDS 1x15 cab he has, and I liked it enough to consider one.

Yeah, but I'm starting to suspect Kindness has a magical aura or something, makes everything near him seem better..

We never even pushed it. It holds that same tone to very high levels, just a bit more than a high quality 2x12 would offer.

Everything around me seems better by comparison. I'm like the ugly chick that makes the average girl standing next to her look like a supermodel.

This is the truth. I went out and about with Kindness for an afternoon, and chicks were dripping off of me like hot bacon fat.
