Members knuckle_head
Private insurers can only have access to your bank accounts if you allow it. Same with the gub'mint.
Members zachoff
Sans the hyperbole, I can't believe some people can't foresee some of the negative possibilities. The digitizing and national access of medical records is equally appalling. No matter how much more efficient it may make some health care, the privacy issues involved outweigh the good, IMHO. People are too trusting of government. Gross. Totally agreed. Big Brother, FTW!!!

I'd much rather deal with solving the privacy issues associated with having a national database and have one rather than deal with a ton of inconsistent and impossible-to-share paper records. I'd much rather deal with solving the privacy issues associated with having a national database and have one rather than deal with a ton of inconsistent and impossible-to-share paper records. So because other countries do it, even though they don't share our Constitution, we should do it? Impossible? Hardly. I've never had a problem with all the different groups I've used, and getting appropriate specialists the necessary records. HIPAA hasn't stopped "anonymous" people from sharing info on celebs or unlawfully viewing their medical files. Look how simple it was for someone to get into Joe the plumber's personal records (including child support info). It didn't matter that what the person did was illegal, once the information hits the press, it's kind of hard to get it back. Wurzelbacher had his records dug into illegally because a political hack was interested. All the gal received was a slap on the wrist. You should have a healthier fear of the government and of unauthorized people digging into your information.

I do have a fear of it. The only appropriate response in this day and age is to behave as if nothing is private, because the fact of the matter is that if someone wants to know something about me, there's a way to find it. Not saying that that's right, necessarily, but it is the reality of the situation.

You seem to think that if such a system were in place, there would be no way to secure it against the type of invasive search that we're talking about. I'm not even going to try to imagine how that might be done at this very moment, but it's not as if other (private) institutions, such as banks, aren't required to maintain large databases of customer information under tight security. Somehow, they manage to do it the vast majority of the time, and I'd be willing to bet that that's not by mistake. I'm not saying that there should be such a database if the idea is that anybody, especially the government, should have access to it at their whim-my view is that there would need to be some legally recorded consent granted on your/my part before any data would be shared with the doctor providing services-and to my understanding, HIPAA already provides for that in some fashion, and any such system would almost certainly be required to comply with HIPAA. How could the big, scary government get into such a database without breaking the law, in that case, and furthermore, what the heck are they going to do with that information once they're in? Whatever. I guess I'm supposed to see the word "government" and wrap myself in tinfoil before throwing myself into a lead box and then burying it. I guess I'm supposed to see the word "government" and wrap myself in tinfoil before throwing myself into a lead box and then burying it. The U.S. government has gotten HUGE over the past few decades and have multiple hands in the pockets of every citizen. Government run health care is yet another hand... A very big hand, and if you're a guy they'll be doing the prostate exams. In all seriousness, I'm pretty f'ing sick of government taking things over. Well, let's see. In The Plumber's case that I provided for you, it wasn't the "big, scary government." It was one of those government workers who happened to be a member of Operation Obama Love. It really didn't matter that the searching was illegal. The access was easy. I'm sorry that point is going right over your head, but it must be an Ohio thing, as bnyswonger just posted about toting guns, too.
