Members Kaesh
In case it isn't clear, the idea is to pan between series and parallel. Haven't messed with wiring in a couple years so... why is this a bad idea? Seems too obvious to not be done before, yet I have never heard of it. Members Ender_rpm
I would think you would run into phase issues along the way, where you'd have sudden jumps and decreases in volume as the out puts of the pickups went in and out of phase. But that's just conjecture on my part.

Members Kaesh
Hmmm. You may be on to something. How about this, using a 2 channel pot for balance, would this be a (significant) improvement?

Members Darkstorm
You cant pan between series and parallel wiring. You can install a switch on 4 lead humbucker pups to switch between series and parallel. The other will give little less output and brighter sound more like single coil but still humbucking. Members Jazz Ad
The question is: why?The answer is in your 8th grade electricity course. Parallel or series are fixed, not progressive states. They're either one or the other. There is no intermediate state to pan through.
Members Kaesh
I know what series and parallel mean, but what prevents you from splitting the current from one of the pickups between the other pickup and the output?

Members Jazz Ad
I know what series and parallel mean, but what prevents you from splitting the current from one of the pickups between the other pickup and the output? It's called a shortcut. The only way to achieve this would be to use active buffers. Even though you'd only be going series when sending the full signal through the other pickup. What you'd achieve the rest of the time would be just the same as panning between the pickups with 2 volumes or a blend, which most basses already achieve. This kind of wiring has been done before, most famously in the Peavey T-40's tone pots.
