I listened to peaches and am not sure how he got the twang on the intro parts, but there's some reverb there as well. It might just be how his pickups/strings sound with the highs cranked. It sounds like regular 'ol bass otherwise, just with no mids. The rest of the songs I can't hear well enough on these laptop speakers at work.

Serious enough that if I have to I will tear two strings off of the mockingbird

Don't do it. If you want the same sound as Chris, just pick up an Epiphone SG guitar and modify it. That's what he plays! http://www.inthequeue.com/guitbass/

They're one of my favourite bands. I've seen them play live about 5 times and wouldn't hesitate to go again.

I wouldn't actually do it, I was just messing with blue

Even if I were to go the sg route, I would need to figure out what effects he is using

None. He doesn't use effects... the only thing I've seen him using live is a TU-2.

He uses a pick and plays into a Hartke I think? with a 1x15 cab.
