My own experience, from a long time ago, is that to break into the Portland scene, you have to be in Portland. Between difficult and impossible to arrange a gig from outside the area. Might have changed.

They might try

They're from Newberg... which is close enough, really.

Then why can't they get their own gigs?

Because there compeating with the other 21,000 bands in the area. First breaks are hard to get, even as close as Newberg, when you don't have a track record or following with the locals.

As you well know, they need to bring a top notch A game, of just fade away.

Very competitive live market.

They're brand new and a bunch of music majors from my university.

They're a very good group and have just recorded and are in the process of mastering their first album. I figured someone from around here might have a few connections. After all a good number of you are gigging musicians.

I don't agree at all that first gigs are hard to get. We have an amazing number of open stages, open mics, songwriter showcases, and so on gigs that advertise every week in Craigslist looking for talent.

Are you going to make $400? No.

Will you be playing your music live in front of other people? Yes.

Does that lead to future bookings? Absolutely.
