Members LMTboston
Anybody have any reccomendations for Vinyl pressing? We'll probably need a total of 40 minutes or so and would like to do a pretty small run (also cheap as possible). Any reccomendations? Thanks! Moderators BATCAT Posted March 24, 2009 Moderators Share Posted March 24, 2009 The reason we're looking at vinyl is b/c we feel like the CD format is dead...everybody just rips thier {censored} to thier computers anyway and then the CD becomes a coaster. We'll offer a digital download w/ the record, but we thought it would be a little more unique and, for people like me who actually like listening to vinyl, something more recent than 88 that's not hip-hop. I know that recently a number of artists have offered releases on vinyl, with the inclusion of a download code in the packaging. I think that's pretty cool, especially because album artwork looks so cool on records. One cheaper option (that I've considered myself) is to do a 7" with a single and some kind of B-side (very old school) and include a download code with it. I don't have a link but I recall hearing of a company that does download codes/hosting or such for pretty low prices.
Members DevilRaysFan
Anybody ever actually press vinyl for a release? Several 45s in the early 80s but, then of course, record players were the thing back then By the way, I like your logic concerning the release of vinyl. Definitely food for thought. Ah - I hadn't considered just doing the record as a single/B side type thing...hmm...that would definately keep costs down. We could also probably get two or more songs per side give that are songs are usually about 2-2.5 minutes anyway.
Members davejh
sorry to ressurect a year old thread, I am a vinyl enthusiast myself. That's actually all I press now. I run two indie labels, and for the past year and a half cd's have gotten' to the point where we just don't even press em anymore. We do runs of 500 cds for the bands to use on tours (cd's actually still sell well at live shows) and we use 100 of em usually for promo/review/in store copies. Anyway, if your looking for a high quality and cheapest route to go, I would highly suggest Dave Eck at Lucky Lacquers. http://www.luckylacquers.com/He is the best mastering engineer (guy that cuts the master lacquer before plating) that I have ever used, been using him for two years now. He does a lot of stuff with bands that have never touched vinyl before, and can guide you from start to finish on the best and cheapest way to press your records. He only does the cutting, but he has exclusive relationships with Rainbo and A+R records, that gives preferential pricing. Hope this doesn't sound like spam or anything, I always get kind of excited when talking about record pressing at all, and was searching the forums to see if there were any threads devoted to it. Here is a couple other newer plants to add to that list as well. Gotta Groove RecordsOhio, U.S Capsule LabsLA, CA AtoZ MediaOffices in WI, NY and CA All of those places also offer retail ready packages. But it's typically always cheaper to use a seperate company for jacket printing, cutting, and sometimes plating. Any other vinyl fanatics on here?Sorry for the long post
Members Vito Corleone
Anybody ever actually press vinyl for a release? I pressed a vinyl single to sell in local records stores and at gigs back around '81/'82. I remember it was cool because it was mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Records who is a mastering legend. Me and another guy in the band didn't like the way the single sounded when it came back so we drove down to Berkeley to the Fantasy studios and personally watched him and listened as he mastered it a 2nd time for us. At the time I had no idea that we were 2 young long haired kids telling George Horn we didn't like his mastering. I didn't know who he was. He must of thought we were nuts, but remastered the recorded graciously and professionally. And it DID sound better the 2nd time. Was pressed somewhere in Northern California that I'm sure would be long out of business by now. I think pressing vinyl would be cool, but I would think it would rather expensive these days and not sure how many you'd sell. But it would be a unique novelty item if nothing else. I still use my turntable a lot and still love vinyl. But I don't know anyone else (except people I've 'met' in chat rooms) who does.

Members Vito Corleone
Northern CA, Sounds like Rainbo Records probably? I certainly recognize that name. But weren't they in Southern Cal? We might have gotten them pressed there. I really don't remember anymore. That was a LONG time ago.
Members apranax records
Hi Guys, we press our vinyls at MMP Vinyl Record Industries in Germany (www.master-media.net ) They start at 100 units, colored vinyl and 180g vinyl too. They do picture discs and also 7inches. We upload our music and printing files and after 2-3 weeks we get our records. They do DMM Mastering which gives our vinyls a prefect sound (never use lacquers again!) The price is much more pretty than the other german factories like Pallas or Optimal. We are very happy with their service.

Members Disfunctional H
Another good company to add to the list is Disc Wizards in the UK. They are offering excellent turnaround of about 3 weeks for main pressings, and I've put a few titles thru them in the last 6 months. http://www.discwizards.com/Vinyl/Vinyl-Pressing-Prices-UK.htm
