Members heatheroo
Does anyone know if Peavey dsicontinued the lighter "baltic birch" version of the sp5? I am being told by a store that the 70+ lb version is all thats available.
Members boomerweps
That's the only version on www.peavey.com listed. I thought, for that weight, you might as well be lugging SP2s. Turns out SP2s are up to 90#!!! Boomerweps
Members RoadRanger
Maybe the "SP" stands for "super poundage" ? If you are "moving up" from PR15's the Impulse 1015 is 15 pounds lighter, takes 25% more power, and is 2db more efficient than the SP5 .
Members scottc
I've got the carpeted SP5s,had them about 3 years, that weigh approx 56lbs, are these the ones your talking about? It may be the new versions non carpeted models went up in weight?

Members RoadRanger
No.... Peavey isn't taking a step backwards are they????I'm guessing the heavier plywood makes them sound a bit better. I really hated the sound of the early SP's and either I'm going deaf or they have gotten MUCH better over the years . At the opposite end of the weight spectrum these guys are 10 mile down the road from me: http://www.flitecabs.com/about_us.htm Kinda funny that they make PA cabs but the owner of the company plays out with heavy, big arse SP-3G's and no subs . The single 12 cabs their guitarist and bass player use are awesome though .
Members heatheroo
So it appears true that the lighter versions have been discontinued? If it really is a matter of the heavier ones sounding better........I can live with that. I was hoping DBoomer would chime in with the definitive answer. Members SoundMan
I think the heavier one is it. I'm not sure of the reasons why it was discontinued. The improved sound comes from the new tweeter design, the RX22 sounds loads better than the old driver, IMO.
