Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted July 7, 2016 Moderators Share Posted July 7, 2016 First thing is...is there any difference in construction? AFAIK, both are semis with the centre block, both have a stop tailpiece. The 335 Pro has some nice pickups and the splittable pickups I appreciate and is also cheaper. Is there anything I haven't taken into account?
Members thatsbunk
Think the only difference is the Sheraton is "bling-ier",FWIW I own an epi 339 pro & it's an incredible guitar for the $... Stock pickups are great.
Members Danhedonia
"Is there anything I haven't taken into account?" Build quality. I'm a fan of Asian guitars, so please don't read as 'bad because it's made in China.' But I have a 90's Sheraton that is a tremendous guitar; the last few years' worth of Epis that I've seen / played (many) are not in the same class. As always, if you can play either / both before buying, that's the most relevant info.
Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted July 7, 2016 Author Moderators Share Posted July 7, 2016 The last two or three years have seen some of the best Epis ever made, LPs, 339s superb build quality and more importantly, pretty thin finshes, good electronics, especially pickups. Members Danhedonia
^^^^ I know, I play them almost every other week. And agree about the pickups. I'd also suggest that the semi-hollows and hollowbodies (well, Casinos and Casino coupes) and SG's are preferable to the Les Pauls, which I still don't dig as much. But I am also certain that literally, under no circumstance whatsoever, would I part with that MIK Sheraton in exchange for any choice in the current lineup. And I am thinking about buying something from that lineup. Those 90's Sheratons can be very special instruments.
Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted July 7, 2016 Author Moderators Share Posted July 7, 2016 Hmmm, tough, I have two Peerless Epis, and they are exceptional...trouble is sellers know it now, Sheratons seem to be mostly Samick for some reason. I honk the fact that the new 335 is almost 100 gbb cheaper may have a casting vote
Members Danhedonia
And let's be honest - it's STILL down to the individual instrument. Some of the Samick's are tremendous as well - it was just a good era to be an Asian born Sheraton. Is there any way to play the used Sherry first? Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted July 8, 2016 Author Moderators Share Posted July 8, 2016 Sadly no, it's away north of the border in Scotland, but I have found a Saein built Sheri as well, from about 2004, and I know Gibson completely refitted their facility as a flagship producer before ending up in Qingdao. every Saein (Shine) Epi and even their own brand are in the same league as Peerless are with semis and full hollows
Moderators Ratae Corieltauvorum Posted July 8, 2016 Author Moderators Share Posted July 8, 2016 Ok, spent the day in bed ill and reading. Lots of complaints about the neck on the 335, too flexible, similar problems to the worst SGs, meanwhile the Sheraton laminated neck has no such problems. I'll post the NGD when it arrives

Members Danhedonia
Oh I've got persistent perspective, alright. Lololololol ..... I am genuinely looking forward to hearing about the guitar. I like the new Casino coupes, but I think you're going to find that the "inside out" solidness of that Sheraton are just remarkable. I got mine for $500 with a case and feel like it was a real deal (I live in a place where most people aren't into the nuances of Asian builds). Color? Color?[/quote'] Vintage burst, it's sort of a replacement for a rare high value MIJ I had, and while I'll always love the chery semis they only look right when on the right piece of wood and very thin finish
Members Midlife Rocker
About the only 2 complaints I can muster are: 1) Gold finish on pickups and bridge wears...but it's been 12 years.2) "E" on the pick guard needs to be glued back on every year or so. Aside from that, this guitar is great to play, sounds great for rock, blues, jazz & surf.
