Members NewGuyonGuitar Posted May 27, 2011 Members Posted May 27, 2011 Trying to expand my small music collection a little bit. I'm looking for artists that I can buy on CD. Yes, yes there is Itunes and I use it but over the years I've lost a few songs, and the way it organizes music is a pain in the ass... I know this is going to be difficult and subjective, but I'll give a listing of guitarists I currently like quite a bit, and if you could recommend seminal albums or artists who have a similar sound, that would be great. Alex Lifeson, Joe Walsh, Joe Bonamassa, Eddie Van Halen, Santana, Angus Young, Pete Townshend, Stevie Ray Vaughen, Mark Knopfler.....you get the idea... So if anyone has a recommendation for a great Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Satriani, Vai or some other album....feel free to share your opinion, and I'll consider purchasing it. thanks
Members mosiddiqi Posted May 27, 2011 Members Posted May 27, 2011 In the "Instrumental Rock Guitar" genre which I don't usually like very much, I've really enjoyed Andy Timmon's "Electric Gypsy: [video=youtube;9MTtV7DWcOo]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MTtV7DWcOo
Members gennation Posted May 27, 2011 Members Posted May 27, 2011 This is easy...Plankton. Or as I call them, The Mighty Plankton. They have every thing you are looking for. You can check a couple of their tunes out here, Humble Colossus is a killer album, it would be my recommendation to pick it up: http://www.myspace.com/search/music?q=Humble%20Colossus&ac=t They have a myspace site with more tunes, but their albums are so all over the place go in with an open mind and plan on listening to a few tunes before you find what you're looking for, but that Humble Colossus is a spot on deadringer.
Members jeremy_green Posted May 28, 2011 Members Posted May 28, 2011 Oz Noy - Fuzzy is a killer albumSteve Morse - Southern SteelScott Henderson - Tore Down HouseJeff Beck - Guitar ShopJohn Scofield - A Go GoJon Finn - WickedLarry Carlton - Last NightMatt Schofield - Heads Tails and AcesMax Webster - Mutiny up my SleeveTervor Rabin - Cant Look AwayUzeb - Noisy NightsWayne Krantz - Krantz, Carlock, Lefebvre All these albums had a large influence on me from a purely guitar standpoint. They are not necessarily the artist's best piece but if you dig one of them a great starting point.

Members Jasco Posted May 31, 2011 Members Posted May 31, 2011 I'd suggest "The Jimi Project" by Phil Brown for some interesting guitar work.
Members mosiddiqi Posted May 31, 2011 Members Posted May 31, 2011 Oh, for pretty much a textbook on melodic hard rock solo'ing you have to listen to UFO's "Strangers in the Night"..Michael Schenker is fantastic on that album.
Members NewGuyonGuitar Posted June 1, 2011 Author Members Posted June 1, 2011 Thank you for all the responses. I've taken note and already have a few of the artists suggested on order. Thanks!
Members gennation Posted June 1, 2011 Members Posted June 1, 2011 Not sure if you are aware of it but you can listen to just about any music you want (full albums) online for free here: http://music.myspace.com Just use the upper right search box. The resolution is great on the audio too. I'm going to listen to that UFO album right now since it's been a long time since I've heard it
