i built a few of em over the last few years...it's not that hard bro...
i'll try and find some links for ya to checkl out...there's some good info out there...
IMHO, it's WAY easier than building alot of solid state stuff is....youi're only dealing with a few components.
the easiest way to start is often to strip an old fender down, some silver face POS with a fiber board in it...ya can strip the circuit and build your own, or hotrod what is all ready there.
two good books for the beginner are Dan Torres' inside tube amps....(kinda the eqivalent of tube amp repair for dummies, but really useful to the beginner amp tech) and Kevin O' Connor's ULTIMATE TONE...IMHO THE definitive amp workbook...
also check aiken amps, blueguitar, and a curious site called "tales from the tone lounge"....if ya google them, you'll find them.
there's a scan of my hand-drawn mods to a super reverb on my website somewhere , i think that you'll enjoy building a tube amp...they are pretty forgiving in terms of component values and circuits, and you can mix-n-match various sircuit blocks from different amps to design what ya want fairly easily.
good luck mate, and have fun!!!
peace

i built an AX84 P1. its a little 5 or 6 watter... uses one 12ax7, and one el84. You can source parts your self, or they offer kits at the AX84 site. I bought a kit... if i had it to do over again, i would probably source the parts my self. It's not so much about the money youd save, because after shipping from 5 different places you probably would save very little.... but i did not like the quality of the parts they sent me... The tube sockets especially... also the enclosure they sent me was about 3X as big as it had to be.

Here's a page with my AX84 amp... this one dates back to the very earliest time when the design was first being refined on Ampage... I made a few minor mods to it but right now I cannot remember what they were!

Also the Ardmore kits look to be an excellent buy: http://www.guytronix.com/pages/1/index.htm
