Members pink floyd cramer
I now have a Leslie 22- sounds sweet but the bass of my solid state 760 simply blows it away. I was prepared for some difference but not THAT much. What could account for this? My sound source is a Voce V3 with a Speakeasy preamp that has treble and bass controls (bass is maxed out). The "22" cab is actually a 100-series (102, I think) with loevres added at the top. The woofer is the stock Jenson so I know it is very old. I have a used Eminence 16-ohm 15" from Tonewheel General that I could install and see if it helps. I am pretty sure that any tube Leslie with a 15" would have to do better than this one for bass response- any thoughts?
Members The Real MC
The 760 speaker enclosure is bigger than the 22, which allows longer wavelengths (translated: lower frequencies) to develop properly. '22s are old buggers (1950s), there's a good chance there are capacitors drying out in there and sucking up bass.
Members pink floyd cramer
Thanks Real. I don't often get to hear a 122 but I have to believe a model that popular with jazz players would have to have a stronger bass. I wonder if a 102 model cab's shelves are at the same place as a 122/22's?
Members suitandtieguy
in the event it is all-original: the amp needs to be rebuilt. the speaker needs to be reconed. then it will compete with the 760. the 760 might still win, but it would go on for a few rounds. Members pink floyd cramer
I have a 147 amp I was going to have rebuilt and converted to 122-type (to try out in the 760) but looks like I may do that with the 22's amp instead. In the meantime i will put the Eminence woofer in the 22 and check back in. Thanks for the help STG and Real MC.
Members Outkaster
I don' t think you want to compare them. The 760 was made for live applications and is a different type of Leslie altogether. The 760 will always be louder. The 22 is an older vintage of the 122 family. Members human
I too wish that the 22H had a little more bottom end. But it does have that smooth, buttery tone. I just bought a b-3 with a 22H and couldn't be happier with it. Oh and hi guys, this is my first post.
Members pink floyd cramer
The 22's woofer does need reconing- I swapped it out with the Eminence and it has more bass now. Now to get the amp rebuilt. BTW welcome human. and congrats on your B3!
