The new Vg-99 and Fc-300 look interesting, taking a notion from the Ehx HOG it looks like.....

as far as a (proprietary) foot controller and putting the scontrols up by your hands?

It's sort of an "everything old is new again" thing, hell the GR-500 even came on a stand

Ibanez had the IFC controller for its MC-1, etc

Totally vague description, but the VG-88 had so much potential that was just a hair away from being realized that I am quite excited about this one.

Perhaps best of all, "Graphical Editor software included to support sophisticated sound making." See id.

If it does everything the GT-Pro does, and does guitar modeling as well as the VG-88 and has cleaned up a few of its drawbacks, it looks like I'm going to have to put on my godin-buying shoes again.

I'm hoping they expanded the HRM stuff into a more comprehensive "synthesizer" -- I mean one of the big reasons the GR-300 was so cool is that it was, in a lot of ways, more of a modifier than a "sytnhesizer" so the interaction wasn't quite as removed feeling as a discrete-parameter-driven guitar synth can be

well I had no idea then!

Does the VG-88 or 8 do the synthy stuff too?

And does the alternate tuning sound convincing, at least?

You have been missing out! The VG-88 does incredible synthy stuff, is wholly polyphonic, and you don't have to adjust your playing at all - it feels quite natural. Alternate tunings are great, and you can often get a better recorded 12 string sound with a VG-88 than with a real 12 string

These are all electric guitar + VG-88 recorded direct:

hmm...awesome!

but you need the synth or hex pickup to use the alternate tunings? Do you have any clips of that?

And how's the VG-8? If I get one, I plan to use it in conjunction with pedals, so I wouldn't need all that extra VG-88 stuff.

Fear,

I think you may be confused about the basic nature of the VG-8/88 and how they work and what each revision contained

there used to be a vg-8 site that got turned into a "wiki" style thingy

http://vg-8.com/wiki/Main_Page

check out the demos and browse the manual and that might give you a better idea of what these systems are all about

You really need the hex pickup to take advantage of everything. Without the hex pickup the VG-88 is just a weaker version of the Boss GT-6. The VG-8 doesn't even have an option for a regular guitar pickup.

Its really a different animal, the VG series. Its biggest drawback so far is that the 8 and 88 require some real creativity to use in conjunction with regular effects/guitars/pedals.

That's one reason I am so in love with the HOG. It doesn't do nearly as much as the VG-88 but has a very similar feel and integrates just like a stompbox.

One thing I always hear complaints about is the tracking...do the latest units have all of that taken care of?

The tracking problems occur not so much with the virtual guitar, but rather with the GR series machines and the pitch-to-midi conversion. The GR units measure the number of string vibrations, decide what note is played and then play samples corresponding to that note. As far as I know, nobody's solved the problem that it takes a while to read enough data with the lower (slower vibrating) strings.

The VG series is different. It works just like a standard digital effect processor, except it processes each string individually. You get out a processed version of what you put in, not a triggered sample. No delay, no "tracking" to speak of really. That's why you don't have to adjust your playing.
