Members erksin
'Sultans Of Swing' was the first song I heard as a kid that made me actually sit up and take careful notice of the differences in guitar tones - this was before I even picked up the instrument. I'll add: The entire 'Live At Leeds' album Anything by Richard Thompson, Hubert Sumlin, or Albert Collins

Members squareking
Sultans of swing has a crazy good single sound. How did I forget this one?
Members kittycaster
It seems like the majority of the single-coil examples given in this thread (awesome examples btw) are Strats. So when people say single-coil sound, most people hear a Strat in their head. Not that I don't also love Teles, P90 Gibsons, Gretches, Rickenbackers! Oh, and the offset body Fenders. Did anybody mention My Bloody Valentine yet?

Members Lanefair
Recently it has to be john frusciante. Single coils make a guitar sound like a guitar I think, humbuckers give them a more acoustic quality
