Members The*Ataris
Ok, I'm totally gay for Robert Smith tones right now and was contemplating a flanger to have some fun with. Yeah, I know he used an old Boss BF-2, but I've heard a lot of mixed reviews. I notice a lot of the "boutique" guys don't make flangers... Is there something that's not so "mainstream" that can pull off that sort of sound. It's not imperative, but a mix knob for more subtle sounds would be nice. I hate treble heavy modulation sounds too... I appreciate any help...
Members CHOUTMUSIC
I'm with ya! Been listening to the cure much lately, and writing songs with chorus and flange on 'em.
Members NoirAbattoir
He supposedly uses a Boss CH-5, too.
Members The*Ataris
Interesting. Well, I suppose a chorus is pretty mandatory for a lot of 80's rock... Early stuff has to be the Boss Flanger, right? Like the bridge in "Boys Don't Cry" and its total overuse in "A Forest"?
Members Liberty Belle
last pic of roberts pedals i saw he had a collection entirely of boss pedals.i love the BF2, the older japanese flanger...i had one once and sold it, i plan on getting another as they're around all the time.i recommend that, the BOSS BF2. MIJ.
Members freeridstylee
If your just looking to get started, with a nice analog flange on the cheap, get the dod fx75c. To be honest its the best flange i've used (but i can only compare them to 2 bosses and the dano fab). Its got a blend, and goes from almost nothing subtle, to pretty deep. But I mean {censored} they sell for like 25 bucks, i can't see how one would afford to live wit out one.
Members only_shallow
yep throw in some chorus in there too. Go for as used BF-2 or an EHX Electric Mistress.
Members Mark Vasquez
what is the main difference between the bf3 and bf2? cause i only use the ultra mode on my bf3, does the bf2 sound like the normal bf3 mode? and i was once thinking how i dont see acoustic simulator pedals either, only boss... Members NITEFLY182
The BF2 is analog and the BF3 is digital. That should start you off on differences.
Members beardcom
i say hf-2 over bf-2 for that 80s indie flange/chorus sound, regardless of what he actually used.
Members MegaTom
I love my HF-2, but it's a one-trick pony if you ask me. Not very versatile at all, so if I were to have a single flanger in my setup, it certainly wouldn't be an HF-2... even though that is actually the only flanger on my board... but that's the sound I'm going for... most other people, especially those starting out with effects pedals, will want something to cover more bases. IMO, you can't go wrong with an older Ibanez FL-9 or one of new Maxon FL-9 reissues for a good, general purpose flanger.
Members NITEFLY182
What is it that makes Boss flangers so metallic? Ive been playing my HF2 a little lately and it just sounds thin and metallic. Im trying to figure out if it can be fixed somehow.

Members Jumbo Fuzz
I am a huge Cure nut, and I have a Boss BF-2 MIJ. It will definitively get you to Robert Smith town (early records). It doesn
Members carrier street
I have one of the MIT BF-2's, set all of the knobs to 12 o'clock and I get the sound you're talking about.
Members homestar_kevin
yeah bf-2 is the way to go, they go cheap as {censored} all the time.

Members theweight
I'd say he used the chorus more on the clean tones. It's all over Disentegration. I actually played a new CH-1 at GC last week and I really liked it, same goes for the Boss Compressor. Call me crazy, but both those had great tones. Although I was using a 60s Players Strat through an AC15, but it was pretty rockin.
