Members zygoat
Bass forum is lame, so... I hate to sound like a nooblet, but is there any reason why bass strings come from the factory kind of unraveled near the tuners, like so that you can see the core of the string? I'm guessing it's a tension issue. I'm about to restring my bass, the factory strings have been on there for almost 2 years and I'm craving that ringing punchy goodness. Do I need to do something weird to my strings, or just throw them on there like any other guitar? this is what I'm talking about:
Members slight-return
It makes them more supple where you are going to be wrapping them around the post (capstan) look at the bridge end of classical guit strings, you'll notice they are usually like that down there as you are tying them in knots
Members czarny
Just toss the strings on there like normal guitar strings. You don't need to boil them or cryogenically freeze them.
Members zygoat
Yeah, that's my plan. I just realized that every new bass I've seen has that going on at the headstock. sometimes it has like red or black fabric up there. the feck?! Members zygoat
I just don't know why they'd put that weird red material on there. I was always wondering about it but never asked until now (nao).
Members slight-return
same basic reason just continues/secures the wrap of the winding so it, but is more supple so you can wind them
Members zygoat
I don't want my bass "supple"!!!!! It's supposed to bring the brutalz.
Members slight-return
no prob - you want brutlz with no supple? then you don't want to have to wind your strings you want...a steinberger!
Members RadioSilence
yeah, the main part of the string is too big to turn round such a (relatively) small circle as the tuning post, so they effectively remove some of the material.the cotton wrapping is afaik too stop the strings damaging the tuning post. Members diapsalmata
D'Addario Nickel Wound strings don't have that "tapered" wind at the end of them. I play in a punk band, and like having a nice, punchy rattle to my bass. These strings hold up very well, and i find they look better, too. The E and A string just step down to a smaller diameter and continue with a tight wound pattern, the D and G strings stay the same diameter the whole length. Give 'em a try, and you'll probably never look back.
