Really the amount of mis-information thrown out on this forum is pretty amazing, I couldn't even bear to continue reading the thread on analog delay's. Anyhow, what all comps do is reduce the dynamic range of the signal making quiet all things loud and making loud all things quiet. Which means that the noise (a weak signal) is amplified much more than the normal guitar signal. So, strictly speaking it is not added (even though the VCA circuitry, which is active, adds a little), but in the end it will sound much louder. As for noise, I've found that my BOSS DD-20 causes a lot of noise and I don't know what to do about that.
