Synths that sport 8 bit samples?

It was? Dang, shows how long it's been since I've POKE'd at the SID chip. I stand corrected.

 

I need to dig out some of the old demos I have that used it. I remember one of them had a big split raster-bar effect, and had a James Brown loop playing.

There were two games on the C64 that I felt really showed-off the SID: something called Frantic Freddy, and Impossible Mission.

Both of which I played to death growing up. In fact, my brother and I played Frantic Freddy a week or two ago. We also have regular Archon and MULE matches.

I lost my 1541 drive and notebook full of games long ago, unfortunately. It's probably unlikely that I'll ever fire the ol' C64 up again, but I can't seem to part with it. It would be like throwing-out a family member (albeit the family member I never visit or even bother to call at Christmas).

Kawai K1 and K1 Mark 2 I believe use 8 bit samples . Hope this helps.

 

 

Yes, the K1 does use 8 bit samples. The K4 upgraded to 16 bit. I still have a K1m module in my rig that use occasionally. After a bit of tweaking and some external fx, it has some great sounds for the kind of ambient music I use it for.
