This is the thread where everybody says Interpol ripped off Joy Division.

There is almost nothing similar between Joy Division and Interpol except they're all white, brooding, and the singers sound the same sort of.

The biggest difference to me is that Joy Divisions rhythm section plays very simple new wavy beats heavily influenced by Krautrock, and the bass is way out in front and totally drives the song. The guitar really don't do much at all except play a lot of very repetative jagged leads, usually never chords, and they almost never take prominance or leads.

Interpol's rhythm section has their ivy league hipster DJ thing going so there seems to be a bigger Hip-hop influence on the drums if you listen to them. Really up beat at times, very syncopated, much more complicated. They generally just have a flow to them whereas post punk bands usually were really either machine like. The guitars really take prominance over most of the songs, and they have two, so usually there's one guitar doing a riff, and another one adding a lot of atmosphere and texture, and makes them closer to later Shoegaze bands like Ride or Kitchens of Distinction than Joy division. So yea, they sound more like a shoegaze band with a darker post punk slant than a straight up Joy division ripoff.

Also, I only really liked the first album, which was pretty great. whatever.
