Listening to a piece by Hauschka can be deceiving: What sounds like an ensemble of musicians and instruments is just one man, performing at one piano. His real name is Volker Bertelmann, and he hails from Dusseldorf, Germany, where he works with his "prepared piano." He wrests disruptive sounds from the instrument's 88 keys by outfitting the strings or mallets with objects such as ping-pong balls, aluminum foil and leather. His new album is titled Foreign Landscapes, and he recently visited NPR's studios to demonstrate his craft...

Resting on the strings of NPR's grand piano are bottle caps, a plastic necklace, a bell and marbles

Yeah, John Cage's prepared piano pieces are really cool also. Keith Rowe's prepared guitar is too along with Davey Williams and Fred Frith. Some real other worldy stuff. I use alligator clips, springs, pipe cleaners, paper clips, megamouth, comb, file, screwdrivers, electric toothbrush/shaver, small electric fan, wisp and a few other things that I haven't seen used before. One of Zorn's etudes that Eugene Chadbourne played calls for:

20+ Balloons
Violin bow
Alligator clips
Metal slide
Resonant spring for scraping
Styrofoam
Pipe cleaners for scrapes
Pencils for extra bridges
Up to 3 different guitars may be required
30 grains of rice inside a balloon
At least 2 mbira tongs
Finger cymbal
Ratchet
Extra strings to be broken or changed
