Members companyman
my new Hamer Eclipse doesn't have one at all? I know that my Firebird did, and Les Paul and Tele too. would having one somewhere in there tame the treble response?
Members Mr.Grumpy
There should always be a cap (capacitor) on the tone control, or else it's a volume control. For a tone control, one lead of a cap will always be tied to ground, usually just soldered to the back of the tone pot. If a volume control has a cap on it, it's probably for "treble bypass", it will be smaller than the cap used for the tone control and the legs will be between two lugs on the volume pot.
