Usually the posts aren't touching the ground.

A hole is dug, a post is put in and then concrete fills the hole to secure the post in place.

Thus the post is actually only touching concrete.

 

Of cause that's not to say the wood can't handle being exposed to earth if it's properly treated.

Also water isn't an issue, again with proper treatment.

Jettys and wharves etc survive in the ocean and in lakes for decades no problem.
