Framus Cobra + 6L6/6550's?

techs say that any el34 amp can handle 6l6 since you set the bias for it, so i'm not afraid about screwing the amp (6550 may do it :()

but i'm curious about how it would sound

when i say "neutral", i mean that it doesn't affect the preamp tone too much like the el34, kt77 and el84's do

el34's always bring that middy british harshness

i've made some tests in a studio with a jcm 800 2204 copy, my peavey rockmaster and a mesa triaxis

i liked how they sounded with el34's, but when i heard it recorded i noticed that AC/DC sound on it, even in the heaviest riffs

{censored}, I never hear AC/DC tone in my cobra live or recorded
:)

I have another one on the way most likely
:)
biased, saturated mod, loaded with Ruby EL34BSTR's the way a cobra SHOULD be!
:)

even the triaxis sounded like old school hard rock

i didn't hear the cobra live yet, but i feel some el34 grind on it

do you think it would sound as nice with 6l6's?

i'm afraid that it may get loose and lifeless like a recto

you could do 6L6's most likely. you want to set your idle current around 35-40mA with them. if you can't get the current low enough, it'll kill the tubes faster because they will run "too hot".

as for 6550's, you *might* be able to put them in there, but you'd have to mod the bias circuit. i doubt you would be able to use KT88's at all, as they usually require pretty negative bias voltages to keep from redplating.

i'll probably try some JJ 6l6gc

i think the cobra loaded with el34 always have that sweden metal tone, and i like it as it is, but i'm searching for my own tone

i'm not looking for more bass or something, just a different and cleaner tone

i sent an e-mail to Framus support but didn't get answered

so i got an answer from Framus (actually my e-mail blocked it as a spam )

they answered my e-mail in 1 day.

Hello,

nice to hear from you.

Yes you can replace the EL34 to 6L6 tubes without problem.

But you have to readjust the bias setting.

Values between 30
