Members joncyberboy
I have an old Marshall 3315Its an SS 150 Watt head. 2 channels and reverb. It actually sounds damn good. Nothing like a JCM800 but nothing like a Valvestate either. Driving the clean channel with a boost got me White Stripes like crunch, then with a Big Muff i got good fuzz. However when kicking on the fuzz it didnt saturate the pre as much as on my Ampeg V4 so had a little less character. However for life i think it'd be a very marginal difference far outweighed by the benefits og not breaking my back!!! If you find one cheap and like using pedals and having a decent Marshall based crunch tone (with a load of nice mids) i'd say go for it.
Members knucklefux
i used to have one. hated it, but i wanted a metal amp, and to say that the OD channel was piercing would be an understatement.
Members joncyberboy
I find that the distortion channel is a little useless. There are a LOT better out there. But for a clean verging on overdrive to use with pedals i think i have found a bit of a gem.
Members knucklefux
that may be the case. i think i used a metal zone on the clean channel when i had mine, and it sounded better than the OD channel:freak: but hey, whatever floats your boat, right? Members joncyberboy
Indeed. Im not really a metal guy, more into Radiohead, White Stripes etc. Maybe for big riffage it'd be a little too shrill. But then i like white Zombie and i think with the right stompbox it'd have a very nice tight WZ like tone cheaper than a Randall.
Members knucklefux
they suck for metal. i'm glad somebody found a use for them.
Members joncyberboy
For a metal sound i actually really like using a PODxt into a Marshall poweramp. Or i use a Mesa single Recto.Im a mids man though which i think helps both the pod and the mesa cut. That said my band is really not metal now, but in the studio other bands i record get great tones this way.
