I don;t own/run a studio commercially. Mine is purely for my own band. In fact i think that there are 2 camps on this board, the pro studio owners/engineers and the hobbyist/band studio owners. This accounts for a lot of the differences in approach. For example i play electro rock, i am developing a style of production that suits this type of music. If i commercially rented out my studio i'd have wider skills, if slightly less honed in this particular area. There's a thread on this page about 'badly produced' records and lots of them still have fans even among the engineering world. It is the 'bad production' that adds to their flavour and uniqueness. Not sure what i am trying to say, but as a muso in a studio i see it all as opne big instrument. On the few occasions i have recorded other bands i see the studio very differently and am much more aware of its short comings.
