Needle in the Hay - Elliot Smith

I didn't read all the pages of this thread, so if that's been mentioned, then consider this a +1.

It's the song that plays in "The Royal Tenenbaums" when Luke Wilson attempts suicide. And for those who don't know, Elliot Smith killed himself by stabbing himself in the heart/chest. That guy {censored}ing meant it.

Crimson, White, and Indigo by Kenni Thomas and Cornbread.

Kenni was an Army Ranger in Somalia in the "Black Hawk Down" fight. He wrote the song abought his best friend, SGT Casey Joyce, the first one killed that day.

Man, if this doesn't rip your lungs out, nothing will.

RIP SGT Joyce

"Winter" by Tori Amos

"Deadhead" by Devin Townsend Band

"The Death of Music" by Devin Townsend

"Angel Eyes" by Frank Sinatra

"And No More Shall We Part" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

"Eli, the Barrow Boy" by The Decemberists

And I'll second "Space Dye Vest" by Dream Theater

Ooh, good call on Mayonaise.

Another sad Radiohead song is Fake Plastic Trees.

That was the one I was thinking of first... and several other of their songs. Radiohead has some sad, sad songs.

I think Bathory has some sad songs too. At least, some of them really get to me.

+1 on Brothers In Arms, too.

Even though the song isn't that melancholy, the lyrics to under the bridge are about when Anthony lived under a bridge shooting heroin for a few days straight, one of his many many binges. Its about the pain he felt and how alone he is in his addiction, and how he never wanted to feel that way again, but obviously he did many many times. :(

Not the saddest song ever, but its sadder than it sounds. Sick guitar part too :o

I have to go with Cash's version of hurt as well...

Another sad song is Smashing pumpkins cover of Thin Lizzy's dancing in the moonlight. Took the original in a completly different direction and made it very very sad... I always liked it, but I am biased :)

Nutshell also gets a vote from me
