Although there can be a problem with weird chemicals in rawhide, and sometimes there may be allergy issues, the real problems start when dogs swallow it. If you're going to give your dog rawhide, give him huge pieces that he wouldn't even think about trying to swallow.

Swallowing chunks of rawhide can be a problem because it is digested hella slow and can make your dog vomit or cause diarrhea for a while. Usually that's the extent of it, but if they get a big enough piece down their gullet it can get stuck in their esophagus, stomach or intestines, and require surgical removal.

I'd either stay away from it or be very watchful when the dog is chewing on it.

Socialising him further is key. Having him around other dogs and especially people can help get him to chill. Being exposed to more, not less stimuli is a way to desensitise him to external stimuli that can surprise him, triggering aggression.

Your vet should be able to tell you if he is deaf and/or blind on one side. If he is, then your vet may also be able to tell you possible causes. There are some causes (brain damage) that pretty much nullify what I said above about desensitisation. If brain damage is the case, then what you are doing now is spot on.

As for the other one, exercise and social stimulation (other dogs, people) can also help him to not be edgy. He may be a real sweetheart, but any dog that demonstrates fearful behaviour can be a ticking time bomb. Please notice I said "can be," not "is," as there always are exceptions.

Of course, we do what we can and he's making progress all the time. It's a slow process, but the improvements he's made since we've taken him in plus how quickly he seems to learn makes for a pretty optimistic outlook in his case.

I'd say I'm 90 percent certain it's just birth defects/brain damage going on. Apparently he was part of a show line and sa much selective breeding as tehy do it just sort of fits. There are other indications also (his eye socket is even a little off on one side) and that's what the vet told us was likely the case given what we've observed. He can't hear well, he rarely responds to noises in the correct directions, he's confused a lot... etc.

Congrats and way to go for adopting a rescue! Definitely keep him busy chewing toys that you give to him so he won't decide it's okay to chew your stuff too.

A lot of people do not give their dogs rawhide because, in addition to the chemicals used to process the imported ones, the ones made in the US have been bleached and treated too. If you can find the ones that have been cleaned, but not bleached, they're okay but just keep an eye on your guy to be sure he doesn't get "plugged up." Rotties have a tendency for that, but as he's a mix, that's a good thing. In addition to that, his temperment outlook is even better.

Just be sure to let him know you are the alpha. I'm a strong believer in raising dogs the Caesar Milan way with discipline, exercise and love. They make great "kids" but you gotta remember, their brains are wired to be part of a pack, not a baby.

I love dogs and I've raised them the vast majority of my life. I've learned from my mistakes and in the process, have gained a lot better understanding. Studying animal behaviour paid off tremendously as well. That's one reason I'm a fan of raising dogs the Milan way. That guy really knows his {censored}.

I've got a 10 month old Great Dane and she's great! She's about 32 inches to the shoulder now and still growing!

As for the rawhide thing, it's because of the way it breaks of when chewed - it can cause real problems in the digestion system for some dogs - such as Great Danes and other deep chested breeds.

As far as vicious dogs go it's down to the owener. A certain type of person goes for a certain type of dog if you know what I mean. If a dog looks scared and then snaps that's fear aggression and is down to how the dog has been socialised etc. It can be helped with proper training.

My best mate has a fairly large dog now. Given my experiences with that psycho dog, and the fact that I know this dog has landed a few healthy chomps into my mate on a coupla occasions, my theory is to give it a wiiiiide birth. It's a rescue dog and apparently the previous owner was very handy with it.

Which is kinda lucky in a way... my missus wanted cats! OK, I'd love to wake up one morning without one of them having hugged a big crap in the litter tray and the house doesn't stink of {censored}, but at least I can be more or less assured, I'm not going to get mawled or have to worry about when it's going to turn and disfigure some kid! I actually remember telling the missus that if she was intent on getting a dog, then it would certainly mean the end of our relationship! Lucky she went for cats lawlz!

Really?? What is it in rawhide that is bad for them?

well, they do have weird chemicals in them, and they bleach them and all that jazz, but mostly the issue is that they bite off hunks and they cant digest it, so they end up with blockages which causes all kinds of messy problems, and can even kill them if not treated

definately get him something to chew, but get a bone and some toys instead. rawhide is no good

he looks like he's gonna be a big boy when he fills out.. we have a rottie (actually looks like your pup) and he's ~135lbs

I love dogs! I wish they could last 50 years though. I prolly won't get another one because it's like losing one of your kids at 15.

No truer words have been spoken. They love you unconditionally and without fail all their lives and it is our curse to outlive them.

Sweet, I'm getting ready to rescue a dog soon myself.

These are the ones I'm really interested in.

My baby passed tragically and unexpectedly just over a week ago. She was 12, but should have had at least another good 4+ yrs in her. Something hit her out of the blue just over a month ago, and we could never find out what the root cause was.

We had taken her to FVS in Tampa, as they're the best veterinary hospital in the area, and they were working her up, so we went home to nap for a couple of hours, and grab a change of cloths. She declined quickly once she got there. She had went into arrest once before we got back up there, and we were going to put her on a ventilator to try and give her a chance to fight the infection (fluid in the chest), but she went into arrest a second time. After they had attempted four rounds of resuscitation I told them to stop.

Unfortunately, another of our girls is getting to the point where it's going to be time to make that choice in the next couple of weeks, and I don't want my son to remember nothing but loss from the beginning of this summer. So, it's puppy time.

LOL Chrisjd! That's an automatic response to being too hot and in need of cooling off. While your little man is still a puppy, you might see if he'll chomp out on a lacrosse ball. I found a good, solid rubber one at a local sports place that really worked wonders on an Ibizian Hound mix I had who thought she was a pit bull.

nakedarab: Sorry to hear about your loss :( I've been without one in my life for nearly four years now, only because the old bitch I rent from won't allow me to get one, even though I had one when I moved in here.

I LOVE mastiffs and other molosser breeds! The ones you posted pics of are all gorgeous, but that last one is super cute. I'd have a hard time pulling myself away from the plott/mastiff mix if we meshed though. I also love hounds and plotts are one of my favourites, along with black-mouth curs.

Yeah, the hound/mastiff girl is adorable, and she has a couple of brothers (one like her, and one brindle), and believe me they're high on the list.

I love the last one too, but he looks almost exactly like my girl who just passed, only he's bigger than she was. Still, the face is so close it's uncanny, the thing with the cocked ear, the eyes, the build, everything. You can tell he's a smart, happy boy. She was a wolf/collie/shepherd mix.

Thanks man, and yea I love that last one too. It looks almost exactly like Kona, but bigger. That's both a plus and a minus. It would be weird looking at him, and thinking about her all the time, or calling him by her name.
