Anaphora in song

There was a post about Joe Pug over in HCAG and his song Hymn 101 caught my attention. It uses a rhetorical device as a hook; specifically it uses anaphora.

Here are the first two verses. You see the repetition of I've come. There is a slight change at the very end of the song, but I'll leave it for you to discover.

and i've come to know the wishlist of my father

i've come to know the shipwrecks where he wished

i've come to wish aloud

among the over-dressed crowd

come to witness now the sinking of the ship

throwing pennies from the seatop next to it

and i've come to roam the forest past the village

with a dozen lazy horses in my cart

i've come here to get high

to do more than just get by

i've come to test the timber of my heart

oh i've come to test the timber of my heart

More lyrics and the song.

Any other examples of this in songs you know or have written yourself?

btw, he's giving away his CD for free. You just need to send him your mailing address. Google for more info.

Does this mean I'm a compulsive anaphoric?

Does this mean there is a foundation for research into the condition?

Does this mean there are support groups?

Does this mean... I'm not alone?

And since I'm a bit of a hermit in my dotage... does this mean that I'm an agoraphobic anaphoric?

Love is real, real is love,

Love is feeling, feeling love,

Love is wanting to be loved.

Love is touch, touch is love,

Love is reaching, reaching love,

Love is asking to be loved.

Love is you,

You and me,

Love is knowing,

We can be.

Love is free, free is love,

Love is living, living love,

Love is needing to be loved.

Love, John Lennon

I want to live,

I want to give

I've been a miner for a heart of gold.

It's these expressions I never give

That keep me searching for a heart of gold

And I'm getting old.

Keeps me searching for a heart of gold

And I'm getting old.

I've been to Hollywood

I've been to Redwood

I crossed the ocean for a heart of gold

I've been in my mind, it's such a fine line

That keeps me searching for a heart of gold

And I'm getting old.

Keeps me searching for a heart of gold

And I'm getting old.

Heart of Gold, Neil Young

Yes, that's what it means.

one I wrote...

cooking bullets - getting ready to take aim

I want so bad for my world to change

cooking bullets - conformity's in my sights

I wonder who'll stand beside me in this up coming fight

cooking bullets - inside my brain

I hope we're not all so different that we're all the same

You go off and cook yours

I'll sit right here and cook mine

we'll have to meet up and go shooting

to see what we find

cooking bullets - write them down with a pen

If I fire and miss, I'll just cook some more again

cooking bullets.....

And it goes on for a while longer

I'm glad to know the term for it

I've been on 24/7 The Cars kick lately and Ric Ocasek is a master of anaphora.

You Might Think

You might think I'm crazy to hang around with you.

Or maybe you think I'm lucky has something to do.

But I think that you're wild ...

You're All I've Got Tonight

I don't care if you hurt me some more.

I don't care if you even the score.

Well, you can knock me and I don't care ...

(I can't recall what it's called when it flips to the end)

Touch And Go

All I need is what you've got.

All I'll tell is what you're not.

All you know is what you hear ...

etc!!!

Good calls on the Cars and Neil Young. I know I rely on this device quite a bit, but it's more of a crutch than a hook, and I always have more conventional hooks in there, too.

The only one of mine that comes to mind is,

You can take me for granted,

But don't take me for a fool

Does that count? I'm having a hard time coming up with examples from popular song, but I know they're out there. "Imagine" is another Lennon one that uses it. There's probably a lot of them from his lazy songwriter period.

I also consider it a tool, a speciality one. Its one that needs to be in your bag even though you might not use it every day because every once in a while it will be exactly what the job needs.

When done correctly I think it can be very effective
