I'm sure most of the baby boomer generation are products of mothers that drank and smoked while pregnant. Back in the day they didn't know any better.

Besides, a woman has to drink a lot to have a FAS baby... 2 or 3 drinks a day probably won't cause any harm.

Although a higher amount of drinking will definitely increase the chances of problems, any drinking during pregnancy poses a risk.

Alcohol is the most commonly used drug. An estimated one in seven women of childbearing age report risk drinking (seven or more alcoholic drinks per week or binge drinking, which is five or more drinks on any one occasion). This is a concern because these women may not be aware of a pregnancy yet. Approximately one in 30 women who know they are pregnant reports drinking at that level during pregnancy. Drinking that may be of risk to the fetus occurs in 130,000 pregnant women each year (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDCb], 2004). Binge drinking and six or more drinks a day (3 oz of alcohol) are especially harmful, but drinking in any amount may cause adverse fetal effects. Alcohol is a teratogen, and use during pregnancy may result in fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), the leading cause of preventable mental retardation (Pitts, 2004).
