Seeing as people are just posting their festive songs and its been suggested we put them all together.....

...well here's a place to do it!

It's been a great year on here with some wonderful, talented people who have no problem sharing their time and knowledge

Here's to the next year

This is from the musical, It's Only Money, that I co-wrote with David Forrest in the late 1980s, early 90s. We did a staged reading in Waitsfield, VT in 1996, then lost touch for a while. He moved to San Diego, then Oregon, and we eventually hooked back up.

When we did I suggested we write a sad Christmas song for a scene in the 2nd Act where Brandon and Marcy, the two kids of one of the main characters, Stacey Delora, a single mother, express their disappointment that she'll be on tour during the holidays. They have a very sweet and funny song in the first act (it got the biggest laugh of the night at our staged reading), but no song in the second.

This is what we came up with. (I can't post the music until there's a credible recording available.)

Last I heard, this show was set to debut next fall at a regional theater in Bend, OR.

^^^ agreed.... you do have a way with a lyric

love the apparel-carol rhyme

Hah! Thanks!

The thing is, I don't think I invented that one. It's probably been done before, plenty of times.

The ones I was proud of were "hemisphere/year" and "ribbon/fibbin'."

How Santa Plays Guitar

LYRICS:

I was standing on the corner waiting for a cab

The snow was falling thick like a Rockwell ad

Holding my guitar going home from a gig

Looking forward tucking in my sweet kids

When suddenly I heard a jingle bell so near

Saw a red coated man with his eight reindeer

He stopped his sled beside me and took off his cap

Placed it carefully atop a big red sack

=============================

CHORUS:

I'm lost I don't know where I am

My GPS went bonkers and Rudolf ran

But son, if you can just point out the north star

I'll show you how Santa plays guitar

============================

I wiped my glasses off I, couldn't believe

There was Santa Clause standing in front of me

My hand was shaking as I aimed to show him true north

And a smile came 'cross his face as he charted his course

He looked at me and said son, I'm a man of my word

Now hand me that guitar AND I'll play the best you ever heard

I gave him my guitar as he started to play

Then the reindeer bobbed their heads and their jingle bells swayed

(CHORUS)

His fingers picked so fast I just, couldn't believe

He's the greatest guitar player, I ever did see

My foot was a stamping to the beat as he played his tune

And the notes floated in the air like a cartoon

When suddenly it ended over, just like that

He gave me my guitar and made a jolly laugh

Now you know how Santa plays guitar, he said

And with that flew away in his reindeer sled

He looked at me and said son, I'm a man of my word

Should be "I'm an elf of my word..."

Once again, you've done a terrific job. I think there are some parts of the lyric that could be polished up a little, but it's a very nice little song.

No, No!!! - Santa can't be an elf. Santa is Santa, and elves are elves. The little 'helpers' who are actually in servitude to a deluded philanthropist who keeps them in isolation confined in a workshop at the North Pole. It's a feudal tale.

Santa is referred to as a "jolly old elf" in the literature. (He's actually half-elven.)

Ahhhh...........nice.

Nice guitar as well.......KG-14? Circa......late 30's?

Thanks, Leonardo. It's a KG-11. 1934 or 35, as far as I can tell. I've changed pickups in it from the Baggs M1 in the video. Though the recording is done just acoustic in my Kitchen.

Here's one I collaborated with a friend on. It was his idea, he wrote and performed most of the verses, I wrote the one verse I do ("Christmas is coming on like an earthquake..."), and a third friend wrote and sang the chorus. I did all the music. It's part of friend I's annual Christmas compilation album. It's a rap song, the first I've had any thing to do with, and the first time I've ever rapped. It was a lot of fun, and a totally different way of thinking about putting a song together. Heartily recommended experience for all songwriters.

Christmas is Here
