Carvin X100B.

She came in last Tuesday.

Been doing some bedroom level jamming in the 25w mode.

Sounds great.

Easy to dial in a sound.

But, took her to band rehearsal Saturday.

Put her in 50w mode and set the level and adjusted the eq a touch for

rehearsal levels.

Was using my Fernandes Ravelle with the Duncan Jazz/JB combo in it.

The low end is a bit spongy for my taste.

Sounded good for our Drop D tune.

But, wasn't too keen on it for our other tunes. (we do power metal)

Maybe I'm too used to the V3 and need to get used to the tonal difference

of the X100b.

Both amps have 6L6's in it right now.

So, I'm thinking of swapping out the X100B to EL34's.

You guys think that'll tighten up the bottom end a bit?

Haven't tried throwing a boost in front.

As for EQ.
I have the bass knob set to about 4.
Mids about 5.
Highs about 8.
Anything over 5 on the bass and this thing has a lot of boom!

As for the graphic EQ. It goes +18 to -18. And is in 3db intervals.
I have it set to lead channel.
Low is set about +1.5 db.
Low-Mid is about -2.
Mid is -4.5
Mid-hi + 4.5
Hi +7.5

So, slightly scooped.

Have you tried upping the bass knob and scooping the bass slider?

I'll try that next practice.

Right now I have the V3 home and the X100b at practice.

I've been looking into the v3, but it seems most videos I hear are with cheap recording equipment, and there are very few clips of people playing the style of music with them I would.

I have played pretty much all of the carvin "high gainers"(except the v3) the x100 was probably the best gain channel wise that I have tried. It just doesn't have the right tone for what I enjoy playing. I like a tighter slighter higher gain yet clearer sound than I can get out of the x100. Haven't tried the reissue though.

As it sits right now, the V3 is tighter sounding and definitely has more gain than the X100b.
And I have 6l6's in the V3 as well, and am using V30's in the 4x12.

I do like the 6l6's better in the V3 than EL34's.
That's why I'm thinking I may like EL34's better in the X100B.
Actually probably makes sense since the V3 is more boogie like, and the X100b more marshall like.
Odd, that Carvin ships them just the opposite.

Marshall's with 6550's sound tighter in the bottom end, and have far more bottom end that EL-34's. 34's are known for a sweet midrange.

If i want to fatten up my X100B that has EL34's in it ,put Fat Bottle 6CA7's in it.
No mods needed, just recheck your Bias.
You get the best of both worlds. Fatness and warmth of a 6L6 with the compression and smoothness of EL34's , my favorite tube. :thu:

I'm using a reissue combo with the stock 6L6 tubes. I'm planning to change the tubes out as soon as I can afford it.

The clean channel on the amp is great, but the lead channel with stock tubes is a little tricky. I find myself messing with setting and EQ every time I use it, but I will say that I've had a couple really good experiences with it.

Trying to decide whether to retube with EL34s or new 6L6s. I think I'd like the lead channel with the EL34s more but the clean better with 6L6s. Looking for a good crunchy tone.

Try the 100w mode it will not be much louder but it does increase the headroom of the amp, which is essential to keep the low end tight. Why do you think bass players normally use 300w + amps? Low end takes a lot more headroom to be reproduced properly.

Also, adjust the bias to a slightly colder setting will tighten the low end a bit. But try the 100w mode first.

Try these things before swapping tubes.
