My seven year old has been going on about letting him see Predator (Arnie version) and we watched it last night, i know its an 18 rated film, but apart from some swearing (and frankly he hears worse from his mum's boyfriend) its not scary and its a brilliant film.

He loved it :thu:

Now he's on about Aliens, which again apart from some swearing, its a good film (we'll watch it this weekend)...

Now is this bad parenting, i dont feel it is..:cop:

But would these films have got an 18 rating today?. 18's today seem alot more graphic now, the boundries have been pushed...

I don't see it as being a big problem. Going to hear and learn those words someday and if you said her boyfriend says worse, then really no big deal at all. If anything you could have a word with boyfriend about talking like that in front of your kid...

Aliens is a great flick too... I still remember seeing that at the movies when it first came out, was intense for its day.

I saw both those films around the age of 10-11, thought they were cool aswell!!

Its not like im gonna let him watch the Saw's/Hostels etc because that is wrong. Not to sure on Robocop though, that may have to wait a few more years...

And yeah, the Boyfriend is a dick, words have been said..

I just watched "Aliens" a few days ago...got it from Netflix. It's been a few years since I've seen it.

No {censored}ing way is that movie appropriate for a 7-year old. Did you actually have to ask this?

Yes i did, which part is not appropiate? genuine question

I think 18-rated films were a lot tamer when I was growing up than they are now. There's some films that even today, I just couldn't get through. Aliens is pretty harmless IMO.

I remember being 12, convincing my Mom to buy me Robocop lol! I mean a cop that's a Robot and goes shooting up bad guys with a massive gun - what 12 year old doesn't want to see that?

I was scared of my shadow when I was seven, but I had a VHS copy of Tombstone I {censored}ing watched to pieces.

Some innuendo, foul language, and violence... but it's nothing like Hostel or any modern horror film.

Aliens would not be a swell choice for a 7 year old in my book, there are worse films, but the chest bursters are bound to bother the kid.

When they re-released ALIEN in like 2003-2004 in theaters I went and it scared me about as much as any movie can in a theater.

BTW, if you are gonna let your kid watch scary movies at least go in chronological order.

I would explain it, but by the virtue that you're asking, you ain't gonna get it.

I'll give you one hint:

BIG {censored}ING SCARY ALIENS GRABBING GROWN ARMED MEN THROUGH CEILINGS TO LATER COCOON THEM AND HAVE THEIR YOUNG BURST THROUGH THE HUMANS' CHESTS...which is shown, in graphic detail, at least twice.

Doesn't this strike you as somewhat inappropriate viewing for a 1st grader?

Scary?? Yes they burst through a humans chest, and?? Watching the News is more graphic these days than Aliens...

Also, have you not seen kids cartoons these days?

Told you you weren't going to get it.

{censored} it. I change my mind.

Rent "Showgirls" instead, get him a 6 of Coors Light, and a pack of Marlboro Reds. Do the occasional apple-bong hits with him, as well. Explain to him what a hooker is, in detail, and why you should both get one after the movie.

I was 18 when I saw Alien in the cinema...It {censored}ing had me "eeeeking" like a 12 year old girl

I guess when you are 6 or 7 watching Alien wouldn't be any worse than me watching movies like "The Screaming Skull" when I was that age...

Sure, there were nightmares...but I survived.... :thu:

Funny I didn't think of the news but I was going to say, "You know I saw far more graphic cartoons when I was in first grade than anything that was in Alien."

Nope, because it's different. That's like comparing the old batman TV show with the PAF! and BANG! appearing onscreen when guys got hit to the recent Christopher Nolan Batman films or comparing G.I. Joes to Black Hawk Down; there's a cartoon aspect/lack of realism with each of those. Yes, movies were certainly rated a lot more harshly back then than now and a lot of "R"s then wouldn't be rated the same now, but that still doesn't change that the movie isn't exactly child-appropriate. It's your kid and you know better than we do what he can handle and it's not like you should stick strictly to the rules set by the ratings (ie. must be 13 to see a movie rated PG-13), but 7 is a pretty early start for movies as graphic as Predator/Alien.

Some of my best childhood memories with my dad were of watching movies. For some reason Robocop and mortal kombat always reminds me of my old man. I was probably 7-9 when i saw it.

I'm going to college, and don't have violence issues. I say go for it! :cop:

My cousins got us watching rated R movies really young, and I found stashes of porn in just about every corner of the house. Did that make me a sex maniac? Nope. Repressed and perverted, perhaps. It made me NOT wanna do it early because AIDS was still new and I don't want my mom kicking my ass for getting someone pregnant.

I'm not sure where I stand on the whole "innapropriate for kids" thing as when we were 11 some kid passed round some hardcore he'd nicked from an uncle. Although I feel I turned out ok, there's no way I'd be comfortable endorsing that to a child now.

I am sure though that the consequence (and blood) free actions of the ninja turtles and WWF is not the same as a scarey ass 9' tall alien skinning humans for trophies, blasting someone's arm off or putting a hole in jessie ventura's chest your kid could hide in

He thought the Predator was "cool", scary didnt even come into it...

Im sure kids these days are alot more de-sensitised to these things, i dont let him play 18 rated games on the Xbox, stuff like GTA, Dead Space etc is a no no, but they seem ALOT worse than Predator of Aliens....

No but when you compare it to similar 18-rated films these days, it's pretty tame and it's obvious fiction. I mean, the dude knows his kid, he knows whether or not he can handle it. I saw Aliens when I was 12 too, didn't shake me up at all; to be honest, I loved the creativity and it started my interest in special effects in sound and in cinematography.

OK, I'm not sure whether a 7-year old should see Aliens, I suppose it depends on the kid and how grounded they are.

Put it this way, I wouldn't show the Saw series to a kid that age.

No way would i let him see Saw, thats way above Aliens.

He's a bright, good kid, he know's whats what, he would not be fazed by that film, if i thought it would cause issues, he wouldnt be watching them end of...
