my motley (amp) crew

So last week la familia was outta town and I had a few hours to kill.

I brought all my amps, and all my electrics together in the same room for the first time in over 5 years. Kinda a pain in the ass, but fun at the same time.

Here's the amps:

Rather than just list them, I'll go in rough order of acquisition and state what I use 'em for:

After a little Sears SS combo used back in the '70's as a beginner, c. '79 I got my first "real" amp, a '69 Kustom 100. Solid state, spring reverb, tremelo, 100W, 1x15 matching cab. Speaker is a J.B. Lansing (the JBL guy). Cab rocks, head EQ is very tinny. I used this as my guitar amp all through the '80's, and as a bass amp for a short while c. '90. It's the blue ("Cascade" in Kustom-speak) one.

In the early '90's a bandmate pointed out the shortcomings of the Kustom and I got a '66 Fender Super Reverb. It'd been cut into 2 cabs, a 2x10 combo top and 2x10 extension cab bottom. It's sitting next to the Kustom and says "Fender" on it. The speakers are Sunn Magna 108's. Semi-retired.

Sometime around the same time, a former roommate of mine was in the process of moving and gave me my first real bass amp, which was an upgrade from making do with the Kustom. A '70's Woodson 250. Solid state, with a matching 1x15 cab. I've blown the head up a couple times since, but it still works. We use the cab regularly for Crash Pad practices since it's easier to move than the Ampeg fridge. The Woodson rig is second from left, next to the Ampeg.

In the mid-90's I got in my first band as a bassist exclusively and from the beginning (in prior bands I played bass in I had begun as a guitarist, and switched, or we switched around). That's when I got the big rig on the left end. A '70's (I'm guessing) Ampeg SVT 8x10 fridge cab bought used locally, and a Crate BX200 solid state head bought on close-out at a local mom&pop. It's my main bass rig today, but mainly used by our Crash Pad bassist Joel since I'm not regularly playing bass currently.

After having used the Super as my main rig in Crash Pad for a couple years, I got the Sovtek MiG 50H "Tube Midget" head, on the right end, as a "scratch and dent" item from Musician's Friend. I got the Risson 4x12 under it a bit after (before getting the Risson I paired the Sovtek with the old Kustom cab), locally. The Sovtek/Risson rig is my main Crash Pad rig, as the Sovtek has a master volume and I don't need to use distortion pedals with it).

Sometime after the Sovtek/Risson rig, I bought the Sunn 200S 60W head next to the Super in the pics, from an online friend, and picked up the DIY open-back Celestion 2x12 cab (a gutted Crate combo amp originally) under the Sunn (it has the "Crash Pad" sticker on it) locally. I frequently used the Sunn/2x12 rig with a pedal in my side band, Hoyt and the Hotheads, which did more roots rock, and that I needed some semi-clean sounds for. I currently use the Sunn/2x12 rig as part of a 2-amp rig, when my church band, First Things First, gigs with a live drum kit.

Hmm, that leaves 4 more odds and sods. A few years back I finally found (in a pawn) the perfect amp for my church gig, a Fender Super Champ XD. It's the little black 1x10 combo on top of the tan 1x12. In church where we have electronic drums I use it as my stage monitor and line it out to the PA. When we play with live drums I use it as my close monitor and line it out to the Sunn/2x12 rig in the backline (with the Sunn rig mic'd if necessary). I've also used that 2-amp rig with the Hotheads.

The tan 1x12 is a weird thing, actually an 80W Mosvalve Mosfet power-amp loaded in a Dean Markley (I think) cab with an EV 12" speaker with the most massive magnet I think I've ever seen. It's sort of a "universal backup" amp. I've used it as the second amp in addition to the SC XD a couple times (so basically as it appears in the pic, with the SC XD on top of it) with First Things First, but its main use nowadays is that I lend it to my Crash Pad rhythm guitarist, who similarly chains his solid state Laney 50W 1x10 to it for a little "quarter stack" for more oomph than his single Laney can muster. It was previously owned by one of the guitarists for the Southern Rock band Blackfoot, and is stenciled on the top "CHARLIE HARGRETT GAINESVILLE, FL." Which is kinda cool.

The other two (between the Risson bass rig and the SC XD) are, on top, a Peavey 2x10 PA cab loaded with Carvin bass speakers, from craigslist. I got this primarily for my daughter to practice bass with up in her room before she moved to college (she used the Woodson head, while I kept the Woodson cab at my office for Crash Pad practices). I'm not too sure about the current state of the speakers. I tried to use this playing bass with the Hotheads a couple years back and couldn't get a decent sound, they may be blown.

Last but not least, under the Peavey/Carvin DIY bass cab, is another craigslist weirdo, a c. 1964 Cordovox 2x12 loaded with the original Jensens. I picked this up cheap, but as the speakers are each rated only 25W (making the cab at best 50W), I can't really use it with any of my amps except the SCXD, for fear of blowing it. I've been trying to flip this on cl for forever now with no luck. A shame, because it's a very cool cab with very cool speakers!

Here's w/guitars:

Thanks guys. They're all pretty much "players," both as to amps and guitars. I'm not really a boutique or flash kinda guy.

You live in a library?

Haha, as you might guess, that's at my office. I'm very blessed to be able to keep most of my gear there (across the hall in my actual office, usually), and we practice in the library after hours with the band. Those books make for great soundproofing!

Wow, cool history and great collection
:thu:

Are you a lawyer by any chance?

Yup. We just do consulting though, with other attorneys. So we don't go to court or wear suits. Jeans and t-shirts. Several of my coworkers are also musicians. We don't make a lot of dosh like most people expect when they hear "lawyer," but that's OK. I'm getting by.

Oh, I just recognized the collection of books. :D

Cool place to store your amps for sure.

Sweet collection man. I really like the red Rick 620. Unusual for color combo for a Rick.

Thanks, yes it's a bit odd. ;) c. 1990 or so Ric tried to appeal to the "modern" player by offering solid colors with black binding and black hardware. The singer in a side band I was in had the same guitar in blue:

Even though the library is little-used due to computers, when we're not actually practicing, I actually keep the stuff across the hall in my wreck of an office, so that coworkers don't have to trip over the junk. ;)

Thanks. I'm a pretty frugal person. On the amps, iirc I've never paid more than $300 for a single piece (whether cab or head). Gainesville, where I've lived since the mid-late '70's, is a college town with lots of musos (many of them young and foolhardy), so it's a great place to live for buying gear.

Thanks! I had a bit of a rough patch last year. In late 2010 I had neck surgery that removed cancer on one of my tonsils and a couple adjoining lymph nodes, and took out a total of 20 lymph nodes just to be "safe." In early 2011 I had chemo and radiation. Tore up my mouth and throat pretty good, and I lost about 50 pounds.

Started back with the band in late summer when I could "sing" again, recorded an album in the Fall and Winter, now I'm a lean mean rockin' machine again.

Gat damn.

I enjoyed the backstory on the amps, I'd love to hear some on the guitars too. Glad to hear you're recovered and back to rockin'. :rawk:

Thanks. I'll see if I have some time later. For a lot of them it's just "found a good deal on craigslist," or in a pawn, but some do have some interesting bits past that. I'm a cheap bastard, so in general I got good to stupid good deals. The most expensive one (LP Classic) was $750, and that was minty fresh, w/ohsc. Alas, I wish it were still that clean, haha. I'm a little hard on guitars. Not intentionally mind you. But stuff happens in the heat of battle.
