Amp sounds great except for this. Ideas?????
Members WRGKMC
Sounds like Frying Bacon huh. Try swapping the preamp tubes around and see if the sound changes or moves. Power tubes should affect both channels so it doesnt sound like those by the description. Be sure to swap them with the same numbers. If it moves replace them. It could also be a leaky cap but from your description it does sound like a tube. My friend has the same amp. His power doubbled with a complete retubing. He was also having wierd sounds and cutouts before replacing them.

Members tedmich
figure ~$10-12 each for decent 12AX7s (x2) and 12AT7's (x2) people like some Sovtek 12AX7-LPS, or Ei 12AX7s, JJ's seem the best choice for new 12AT7s. See http://audiozone.dk/index-filer/tubes.htm You have EIGHT EL84s! No need to replace them unless they fail, people like the JJ EL84s if you do...about $12-15 each for matched sets off the Ebay
Members Bubbalou
Can be the preamp tubes for that channel or even the socket. If the socket pin tubes are spread this can happen too. Try swapping one tube at a time between the two channels. If the problem moves to the opposite channel you found the culprit tube. If not and it remains in the same channel suspect socket pin tube (too loose or spread out). You can tell by close inspection where one or more pin tubes on the socket are larger diameter than the others. If you find this, let us know and we can tell you what to do to fix it. Members whiteop
sounds like preamp tubes to me too...Had this problem before and changed out my preamp tubes and that fixed the problem. The tubes hadn't been changed in about 14 years....

Members Bubbalou
Had two 12AT7's that caused hum in two different amps. It was a loud hum though. It would start out low hum and within a minute or so it would increase dramatically.
