Members 335clone
Just wondering if anyone has any tips for playing mandolin lines on guitar. I have been working on Zeps Going to California in open G, but it seems so bare without the mandolin. Anyone ever retune to GDAE on a 3/4 scale acoustic or ukulele to simulate a mando? I just printed out the mandolin tab for this song, so I'll try retuning something tonight.
Members F-holes
Try placing a capo on the 7th fret, and not playing on strings 5 or 6.

Members 335clone
Thanks guys. If I capo at 7, strings 4-1 would be A-D-F#-B (which seems like a ukulele tuning). The mandolin tuning I found is G-D-A-E, so I'm still kinda confused. http://www.mandolincafe.com/tab/gotocal.txt

Mandolin chords play as mirror image to the lower(bass) strings on the guitar. Damn, I think I just need to get another instrument. Won't the wife be thrilled:love:

Members jackwr
Buy a Mandolin.
Members knockwood
Buy a mandolin and the cheapest accordion you can find, and stash the mandolin. Pound away on the accordion for a few days, then chuck it and announce to your wife that you've decided to take up the mandolin instead. She will be thrilled indeed. I've already been informed that the next instrument allowed into the house will be a bass for my 10 y/o, so the accordion is going to have to wait a while;)

I play my Baby Taylor close to the bridge to get a half decent mandolin sound. The voicing of the BT is somewhat mandolin-like because of the small size.
