Faux mandolin on guitar?

Just wondering if anyone has any tips for playing mandolin lines on guitar. I have been working on Zeps Going to California in open G, but it seems so bare without the mandolin. Anyone ever retune to GDAE on a 3/4 scale acoustic or ukulele to simulate a mando?

I just printed out the mandolin tab for this song, so I'll try retuning something tonight.

If I capo at 7, strings 4-1 would be A-D-F#-B (which seems like a ukulele tuning). The mandolin tuning I found is G-D-A-E, so I'm still kinda confused.

The mandolin is tuned in 5'ths. GDAE=low to high.

Mandolin chords play as mirror image to the lower(bass) strings on the guitar.:)

OK, so maybe if I capo at 12, and invert the tab I have, it will sound so-so?

Damn, I think I just need to get another instrument. Won't the wife be thrilled:love:

Buy a mandolin and the cheapest accordion you can find, and stash the mandolin. Pound away on the accordion for a few days, then chuck it and announce to your wife that you've decided to take up the mandolin instead. She will be thrilled indeed.

:D Good plan. Did this work for you?

I've already been informed that the next instrument allowed into the house will be a bass for my 10 y/o, so the accordion is going to have to wait a while;)

I play my Baby Taylor close to the bridge to get a half decent mandolin sound. The voicing of the BT is somewhat mandolin-like because of the small size.
