If you play fingerstyle they are worth checking out. I have an old Lowden F12C, very well made, loud but well balanced sound. The sustain is great and each note of a chord is audible, without being muddy. The neck is wide but shallow - takes some getting used to but it's worth it.

Lowdens don't sound like Martins or Gibsons- they are built differently from either. Lowden are also a nice company to deal with, responding promptly to emails etc.

Haven't played a Lowden, but our worship pastor has an Avalon, which I understand to be similar since they're designed by George Lowden. I've played it a bit. It's obviously a very well-made instrument, and it sounds great, but at the price he paid it ought to. It's obviously a subjective thing: there are some great players who swear by Lowdens - like Richard Thompson.
