The 10th Fret Dot?

AKA, The 10th Fret Fretmarker.

 

Most guitars I've seen have the usual suspects: 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th.

 

But every so often, you see a guitar that has a 10th fret dot instead of the 9th.

 

So, anyone have any useful knowledge about this? Or is it just a meaningless, arbitrary thing?

 

 

(I know, some guitars don't even have fret markers!)

I think we can collectively fabricate a tale of intrigue and mystique regarding the illusive nature and hidden meaning of the 10th fretmark.

On banjos, 10 is the standard and 9 is the anomaly. I like the 10th fret marker because it breaks up the odd-even pattern. Sometimes in the heat of the moment I get 8 and 10 mixed up on the guitar.

European-made mandolins and guitars often have a 10th fret marker, rather than a 9th.
