Members fist Posted August 24, 2007 Members Posted August 24, 2007 you have any youtube stuff? You're one of the few classical guitarists on here that's got hall of fame status and I'm just interested to hear you play some classical guitar stuff. If you don't have any youtube or soundclick etc. stuff, you should do some - there's probably other people here that are interested to hear you play too.
Members riffmeister Posted August 24, 2007 Members Posted August 24, 2007 You're one of the few classical guitarists on here that's got hall of fame status....LOL! That just means I spend waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much time in cyber-world (and not enough time playing)! I'll try to get some nylon string stuff up on Putfile. In the meantime, here are some clips of me playing electric guitar, the first two are clips of me living up to my namesake, the second two are songs from two of the bands I play in:http://media.putfile.com/Supreme-16-full-EQ-channelhttp://media.putfile.com/plus-Fulldrivehttp://media.putfile.com/Ju-Ju-Charles-Davis-Quartethttp://media.putfile.com/All-The-Way-Jack-Diesel.
Members Etienne Rambert Posted August 24, 2007 Members Posted August 24, 2007 Really enjoyed that RM. Wish I could play lead like that. Is that you playing lead on "Black Velvet"? That synth-sounding lead part - is that you on guitar? How did you do that? Not that I think it's a good idea. Not that it matters, but my opinion would be that if that's a synth lead played on keys - it sucks. If it's a guitar lead, it's interesting that a guitar can sound like that. But it still sucks. But the lead guitar player - is really good!Is that you? Keys player comping chords is good too.

Black Velvet? Not sure I know what you're referring to. I'll pass on your comments to the keyboard player, LOL! I'm tracking most, but not all of the guitar parts in the last song. The lead guitar parts and the electric rhythm parts (arpeggios) were done by me.
Members Etienne Rambert Posted August 24, 2007 Members Posted August 24, 2007 Sorry. It sounded like "Black Velvet" the old Blues/Rock song from the 80's. I am not sure if that's your lead or his synth trying to sound like a lead. The playing is excellent. But what is it? This is the song I'm referring to: http://media.putfile.com/Ju-Ju-Charles-Davis-Quartet Sounds like "Black Velvet" to me. "Mississippi in the middle of a dry spellJimmy Rogers on the Victrola up highMama's dancin' with baby on her shoulderThe sun is settin' like molasses in the skyThe boy could sing, knew how to move, everythingAlways wanting more, he'd leave you longing for... Chorus:Black velvet and that little boy's smileBlack velvet with that slow southern styleA new religion that'll bring ya to your kneesBlack velvet if you please..."
Members riffmeister Posted August 24, 2007 Members Posted August 24, 2007 Ah, that's a Bob James tune called "Ju Ju". Our band is called "The Charles Davis Quartet" but we are a trio. Charles is the keyboard player and he doubles up by playing the bass line with his left hand and keyboard part with his right hand. He is actually quite amazing! I agree, though, the synth sound in a couple of parts was a bit over the top. The drummer is playing electronic drums in that song, so the keys and drums were recorded direct in. I feel like a dinosaur playing through a mic'd tube amp! That was a live take in the studio, btw, no overdubs or going back to 'fix' mistakes. I thought it came out pretty well, all things considered.
Members Etienne Rambert Posted August 24, 2007 Members Posted August 24, 2007 It sounds like he's playing a saw wave on that lead. But the attack is very guitar-like. I was thinking you had some kind of FX pedal that allowed your guitar to sound like a Saw Wave synth patch. The execution of the part was super. He's a better musician than me. But the idea was flawed, IMHO. I don't listen for a saw wave in a Mississippi-style Blues/Rock number. It sounded out of place. The attack made me think it was a guitar playing it though.
Members d03nut Posted August 24, 2007 Members Posted August 24, 2007 riiiiffff.....riff, the riffmeister, meister-bleister, riff.....enjoyed it "all the way"......

Members Steverino Posted August 24, 2007 Members Posted August 24, 2007 Hey, I got more posts than Riffy...how come I suck?
Members riffmeister Posted August 24, 2007 Members Posted August 24, 2007 OGP, d03nut, fist, thanks for your positive feedback! here's one more, nylon string (doubled) and voice playing a jazz standard:http://media.putfile.com/My-Romance-90And no, that's not me singing! It's a bit of a 'project', but I'll work on getting some solo guitar stuff up, too....

Awesome! Who is singing? They have a really cool voice.Additionally, the guitar(s) sound great. Way to go! That was by far my favorite of all the songs you posted.Ellen
Members denvertrakker Posted August 24, 2007 Members Posted August 24, 2007 I thought it was great! I'd have EQ'd the KB a bit differently, but that's just me. Wish I could have heard the whole thing - it crashed 2:44 in. But I'd have bought an album with that on it....
Members MattSkibaIsGOD Posted August 24, 2007 Members Posted August 24, 2007 wow. great clips riffmeister.
Members Cripes Posted August 25, 2007 Members Posted August 25, 2007 Pretty cool Riff. Nice chops. Wish I had something like a band to work with.
Members Sparhawk Posted August 25, 2007 Members Posted August 25, 2007 Very very nice there Riffmiester. Cudos go out to you and all those in your clips!
Members riffmeister Posted August 25, 2007 Members Posted August 25, 2007 Awesome! Who is singing? They have a really cool voice. Ellen, the gal singing is a friend from work. She had heard that I played guitar and asked for lessons. Several months into guitar lessons I find out that she is an accomplished flute player......and oh my gosh, she is! Here is an example of something we recorded:http://media.putfile.com/Meditation-68And then a few months later I find out she is a very good vocalist! Here's another example of something we recorded, a Bob Dylan song:http://media.putfile.com/Feel-My-Love-60The violinist in that tune is yet another coworker......a lot of musicians in science, I guess!
Members riffmeister Posted August 25, 2007 Members Posted August 25, 2007 DT, MSIG, Cripes, SH.......thanks for the kind words! Cripes......yes......playing in a band is a real joy. I always learn from the people around me, really keeps things interesting. When things are slow with the bands, I try to keep up my classical chops and do a little song writing. It's all a heckuvalotta fun!
Members drnihili Posted August 25, 2007 Members Posted August 25, 2007 Thanks for those last two riff. I especially liked the Dylan tune. Manged to find the chords and put them together well enough too sing to my wife and son. Nothing nearly as polished as yours, but I think the they appreciated that it was heartfelt nonetheless.
Members riffmeister Posted August 25, 2007 Members Posted August 25, 2007 hi drnihili, this is the way I played the chords for the verse. the chromatically descending bass line sounds pretty cool, I think. X02220 (A) 4X2400 (E) 3X2030 (Em) 200230 (D) 100230 (Dm) 002220 (A) X20200 (Bm7) 020100 (E7) X02220 (A)
Members drnihili Posted August 25, 2007 Members Posted August 25, 2007 Thanks riff, I'll try those, here's the ones I was using. Chords:Cadd9 = x32022 >Em7 = x20033 > Em7b5 = x10033 > F = x03211 Fm = 122111C = x32010D7 = x00212Dm7 = x00211G = 320033 Looks like yours walks down the E string while the ones I found walk down the A. This song is making me wish I knew what the heck to do with a pick.
Members riffmeister Posted August 25, 2007 Members Posted August 25, 2007 D7 = x00212 Dm7 = x00211 G = 320033 check out what I did in red above......it will keep the bass line intact during its descent.the song sounds great played fingerstyle, too! throw away your pick!

Ouch! Those hurt. Probably good for me to stretch like that though.Yeah, i fingerpicked at it for a while too, but like the sound of the simple strumming. I may add a few picked notes once I get more comfortable with it.
