Members Fred Fartboski
A friend of mine is selling a guitar on Craigslist and got the following response. I told her not to bother to reply and report it. Has anyone else seen this scam on Craigslist before? This isn't the way it was formatted, but you get the idea. Thanks for the prompt response.. I am ready to buy it now for birthday gift for my son and i am at sea at the moment as i am an oceanographer and dueto the nature of my work, phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you an email regarding it. I really want it to be a surprise for my son so i wont let him know anything about it until it gets delivered to him, i am sure he will be more than happy with it. I insisted on paypal because i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i can pay from my paypal account, as i have my bank a/c attached to it, i will need you to give me your paypal email address and the price so i can make the payment asap for it and pls if you don't have paypal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to www.paypal.com and get it set up, afteryou have set it up with paypal so as to put the money through. I have a pick up agent that will come and pick it up after i have made the payment. Thanks
Members FretFiend.
I've received similar ones. No, I don't take them seriously. What puzzles me is what a scammer like this is after by just asking for an email address. Your email address might be worth a little to a spammer/junkmailer, but beyond that, what can this guy do with just your email address?
Members WildWill
Scam. If there were a "pick up agent" then said agent could just as easily bring cash to the agreed upon exchange location, such as a busy parking lot. I've had similarly worded responses in the past. Always with some sort of "agent" to facilitate the transaction, always with some reason why phone calls are not possible, etc...
Members panhandler
When it comes to Craigs list it's cash & carry 100%. Unless it Jesus. I will take his check, but I will hold the item until it clears.
Members Steadfastly
If I got something like that, would email him back and say no problem, come on over or have your friend come on over and pay, pal.

Members Samilyn
Scam. The "oceanographer" part is just a variation of the same old theme that's been going on for years.

Yeah, they're always somewhere in the boondocks etc. or traveling, etc. where they cant' access their money, etc. etc. The "oceanographer" is a pretty good one though.
