The Ohana Tiple

The "tiple" is a ten-string instrument that seems like a cross between a mandolin and a ukulele. The tuning is as follows:

A-a, d-D-d, f#-F#-f#, b-b

The upper-case characters represent an octave below the other strings within a course.

I'll have a video online sometime over the weekend.

Exactly. That's "D" ukulele tuning -- familiar chord and scale shapes for a guitarist. The tiple is a great rhythm instrument. Quite popular for a short period, then mostly forgotten. You see old Martins and a lot of Regals, but there are generally structural and intonation problems.

I distinctly remember ending up on Kauai, after the 1965 Transpac Yacht Race, in a place called the Kalena Bar, listening to our old friend Gabby Pahinui strumming out an old Martin tiple, singing the songs he sang so well. Wow, what happened to those good old days?
