Members boyakasha
this is duplicated from the amps forum... can anyone help me get close to getting a sound like the who on something like "anyway anyhow anywhere" or "my generation," the creation on "painter man" and "making time," or even the sound at the beginning of "how strong my love is" by otis redding? the tone i'm looking for is not too over-driven or fuzzy, but it's got a wicked punch to it. any notion on what amps they're using, or guitars? or does it have to do with the interplay of the bass? amp settings (low, mid, high, etc...)? i have a fender quad (a twin with 4 speakers instead of two), a tubescreamer overdrive, and a diaz square face fuzz pedal. i'm playing through a les-paul-type gibson ('83 invader). i'm dying to get this sound. Members loudneighbor
A tele through that amp with minimal crunch would cop the Who stuff. You could also use a Rickenbacker. Don't know about the other stuff.

Members AbbeSauniere
Eddie Phillips(creation) used a 335 and a AC30 I believe. Early Who=Rickenbacker + JTM45.
Members readymade
You've got good taste in music! In my old band, a lot of our material was based on (okay, ripped from) early Who and Creation stuff. I used an Epi Casino and then, towards the end, a Rickenbacker 330 through an AC30. My main overdrive at the time was a Vox Valvetone. I'm not sure how close I got to Phillips' or Townshend's tones, but I was able to coax feedback pretty easily, especially with the Casino. I think the key for those guys was really cranked amps--there's that special, natural compression that you get from a high-powered cranked amp that's hard to replicate. The Who and the Creation also shared a producer in Shel Talmy, so the similarities that you hear in the guitar tones of each group might be attributable to the recording process and production (and therefore much harder to cop in a live situation). Maybe try a decent compressor and/or an EQ pedal. Oh yeah, good call on "That's How Strong My Love Is." Great song--my wedding song, in fact. And Steve Cropper is hands-down my favorite guitarist (that's a Tele through (I think) a tweed Fender Harvard amp).
