BTW, I wish I had an uncle willing to buy me a nice guitar to jam on when I was younger.

What sort of music does he like?

I would say the OLP or the Peavey.

They both have humbuckers and are good for rock.

The forums can only give you so much. Go to a music store and play the guitars and see which one you like the best.

he decided on that one. I think it is a good choice. It won't be a Fender Strat, but he is just starting. And if the electronics crap out, buy 2 pots and a 5 way switch and replace them. Not exactly an expensive upgrade.

thanks to (almost) everyone for their help

I will go home and jam on my photoflame bass now. I think it sounds great!

:p

Another good option might be the Samick Malibu's. I just picked up a brand new MB-1 for $79.
:D

I'm very tempted to pick up a used 112 myself - they can be fuond well cheap on ebay, and in time would be well worth upgrading (I have notions of a HB sized p90 in the bridge...)
