Members Vendor Defendor
As far as I know it meant nothing. It was supposed to be the new Les Paul and when that idea sank they named it SG. I think the guys on the assembly line started calling it sexy guitar, solid guitar etc. and the initals just stuck. Members Retrospex
If anyone is wondering, the ES in ES-335 or ES-355, stands for Electric Spanish. Yes the original SG was a Les Paul, it took the single cut Les Paul's place when they discontinued it after the 1960 run.
Members FLYING V 83
It's actually "solid guitar", not solidbody. This from Gibson themselves.
Members syrinx
It was advertised as super guitar for a fashion, I can remember a couple ads at least- after les pulled his endorsment. After the regular les paul came back- thats when I heard the solid guitar used as sg.
