Members bmast160
Can someone please clear all these up for me? Is a fishman matrix a piezo and active pickup? What about a fishman rare earth blend...magnetic and active? What are some examples of passive pickups? Can piezo pickups be passive? What about electric guitar pickups...do strats, teles, and les pauls all have active magnetic pickups?

Members Brick
Passive pups are usually made out of: 1.Ceramic-HIgh gain 2.Alnico PAFish-used in most gibsons Actives like EMG's need batteries to work, usually 9v batteries. All pickups have a type of magnet in them. Piezos are usually mounted under the bridge saddles, and give a more acoustic like tone. Piezos and the fishman rare earth are all active and require a battery for them to work
Members Mr_GoodBomb
Yes, active pickups have a pre-amp built in. Most don't need ground wires, they're self-grounded. The pre-amp cleanly boosts the output of the pickup (without a battery, active pickups DO have output, it's just extremely low).
Members bmast160
so a fishman rare earth blend is a active magnetic and a fishman matrix I is a active piezo?
Members Mr_GoodBomb
Does the rare earth blend require a pickup? If it requires a pickup but has pole pieces and isn't situated in the bridge, yes, active magnetic. If it's active and in the bridge itself, piezo.
