Hmm, it's true that they probably won't do much time if any (though the damage and theft value is over $2000) so I am not to worried about that.

I think I will press the charges under a few conditions with the University:

1.) They are allowed to stay in school but under probabtion for the rest of their stay here, they {censored} up again they are kicked out.

2.) Every semester they have to do 30 hours community service.

3.) Every year they have to give a presentation to EVERY First Year Experience about public safety, as well as they must share their story and explain the legalities behind what they did, what the potential consequences were etc.

4.) IF they decide to leave the University, I want the charges left to the Police, to the full extent. This way they are forced to stick around (more chances for me to get my hands on them) and forced to be known around campus as douchebags.

5.) They are put on probation, this means if they are caught drinking, smoking pot, or breaking the law again they DO go to jail.

I know most of you think I am crazy for giving them another chance, but I think these conditions are fair.

I am willing to give them another chance, but if they do {censored} up again I want them to be punished as if I hadn't.

If the University isn't willing to meet these conditions then I am going to press charges so hard they will get a feeling for the prison life.

Don't feel sorry for them, press charges so they will not want to do this again. Happy ending for you, for them....

Something tells me this same thing.

On the other hand, they get kicked out of school and become part of our legal system, when they do get out they might feel they HAVE to keep doing it to survive as they're job choices will be minimal, and without an education, who knows....

Some sort of long probation that keeps them in school, MAKES them get a job, and make payments to you for the value of the amps and printer?

Dunno.....

Good luck with that, Hammurabi. Seriously, just press charges and let the court do what it does.

PS: Why, since your campus is a State of S.C. property and under State Police jurisdiction, are they not in jail regardless of your disposition since breaking and entering is definitely a crime worthy of jail time? Do they have some rich powerful Daddy or something?!?

Well actually Coastal has its own police department, so before this case is given to the state authorities it goes through them.

Though it will eventually go to the state regardless of the University and its police force's decision. So in the end I may have no say in their fate, but for now I do.

What you need to find out is if this is their first offense or not. If so, they will get probation and fined with some community service -- press charges. I'm sure your school has something that will ensure they are kicked out for at least a semester and they should be. They do not deserve the opportunity to be in school. If not their first offense, they should do some jail time, sorry, but these guys are creeps and need to go away for a while.

That's the best damn point anyone has made in this thread. I DO need to find out if this is their first offense, I had just been assuming it was.

If it isn't I am definatly going to press charges, though most likely I will end up pressing them anyway.

I'm going to duck out of this thread. I enjoy talking about guitars. I disagree with some of you all but I am not going to get into it cause it's not why I'm here.

Because you honestly sound like some bleeding heart -- not trying to be harsh here, but crime is so damn high because people like you do not want to punish these thugs. {censored}, just put your stuff on the street and let them have it. Yeah, I've had a couple of friends in the last 30 days robbed, one at their rehearsal room and the other had her apartment door kicked in and had stuff stolen. They didn't get anything back. Only one had insurance and other can't afford to replace stuff. These people think society owes them stuff that isn't theirs. {censored} em. Hell, just hang them. I REALLY hate thieves if you want to get right down to it.

You seem to be forgetting something. You are the victim, not the judge. Unless the jurisdiction is strictly controlled by the campus this should be taken out of your hands as soon as charges are pressed.

It's currently under the Campus Police jurisdiction since it happened on campus property. More likely than not it will move up to the City, County, or State level (probably state since it is a State university) and be out of my control anyways.

Plus all of the stories about people getting robbed is making me want to just put them in the chair more and more.

I was under the impression that your Campus Police are State Police officers so it's interesting that the school has the ability to usurp the laws of our state and intervene on behalf of captured criminals...especially since their motives are probably self serving not compassion driven.

If they had broken in and raped your sister would you have any doubt? Would any of you have any doubt?

If not then when did any of you develop this dislike for the laws regarding breaking and entering and larceny?

It's quite normal to feel empathy for the criminals but that shouldn't keep us from demanding our fellow humans obey the laws that protect us all.

To the original poster: I've been down Barberry street and seen the crap some of these punks wasting the parents tuition money pull. They behave that way largely because misplaced compassion has been used instead of discipline. Bad parenting/non parenting has bred a sub-set of your generation that are punks without a clue.

You would be doing everyone involved a disservice if you let them off. Your list of alternate punishment sounds pretty good but do you really think it would be lived up to by the punks or the school? The school wants the story to die before it's ever told and the punks just want to get away with it..the easier you make it for them to get away with it the more likely they are to repeat and even step it up next time.

I'm not saying that they shouldn't be punished or kicked out of school. I'm just playing devil's advocate more than anything. If this happened to me, I would press charges. I have had things stolen also and there is no excuse for what thieves do. I just don't think he should be soliciting the advice of a bunch of guitar forum people, and do what feels right

Press charges. They decided to {censored} up their lives by doing this, not you. I hate to say this, but you should feel obligated to ensure they feel the consequences of their actions, and get that life isn't a {censored}ing game.

From the original thread:

"I currently attend Coastal Carolina University here in Myrtle Beach, SC. I went up to Charlotte to spend Thanksgiving with my grandparents and when I returned today I discovered my room had been broken into. Luckily I had taken my computer with me along with a guitar, unfortunatly I didn't bring my amps.

The Egnater TOL 50 and the Epiphone Blues Custom in my signature were taken from my room, along with a few other things (like my $35 hp printer).

To say the least I am pissed.

One of my roommates was staying home this week and when he went to eat dinner with his family he left our front door unlocked.

It looked like they broke into my room first and then tried to break into his before giving up, lucky {censored}er. They must have kicked in my door because the lock is just completely {censored}ed up, along with a split along the side of the door. His room looks like someone tried to kick that door in but wasn't as successful. Our other two roommates rooms don't seem to be tampered with.

Needless to say I am really pissed about this. I already notified the University police and they are going to go over the security tapes from the past few days and try to find someone carrying out two large amps from my building. If they see them, I at least have a chance to get my amps back. I also have to go talk to them tomorrow to try and 1. Identify the person on the tapes if they caught them and 2. If they don't catch them or if I can't identify them to try to think of someone who knew I was going to be gone and go one from there.

If they dont, well I am out about $1000 worth of equipment, which pisses me off since I was trying to sell them to fund a new amp. Now it looks like I will just have to save up for a new one.

I am just putting this out as a word of caution to anyone who lives in college dorms, make sure you AND your roommates are constantly keeping your doors locked, I couldn't have done anything to prevent it, but my roommate could have."

Well after a few hours of watching security camera tapes we finally caught a glimpse of the jackasses who broke into my room.

They weren't very smart about it.

To start, there are only cameras watching the fronts of the buildings, if they had walked around the back they would have gotten away with it.

Anyway, the dickheads broke into my room on Thanksgiving day at 2:47 in the afternoon. They left my apartment at 3:12. The camera caught them walking out of my room with two large black boxed shaped objects and a laundry bag full of unknown objects (a.k.a my printer, my backpack, and my safe which is broken and empty).

The real funny part is I didn't even have to I.D. them. They walked from my building to their's next door, right out front. The cameras saw them the entire walk.

The campus police "escorted" me to their room to see if the large black objects were indeed my amps. At first they didn't open the door, though they were noisy enough for us to know they were in there. We called a Resident Advisor to open the door, and what do you know there they are in, let's call him Bastard A, Bastard A's room.

Sitting in the corner were my Epiphone Blues Custom and my Egnater TOL 50, and Bastard B had the balls to be sitting on the Eggy.

The looks on their faces were priceless.

After I got a look at the amps I turned to the officers and told them those were my amps. Then I turned to them and said, "You guys are so {censored}ed."

Long story short they were charged with theft (I think the legal term is larsonry? I didn't listen to the whole deal I was just happy to recover my amps) as well as breaking and entering.

They have been kicked out of Housing, charged for the damage to my door and the damage to my roommates door, and of course, their parents were informed.

Personally I don't give a {censored} what happens to the douchebags, but I swear to the lord if I see them on campus I will make sure to let them know how I really felt.

Oddly enough, my printer was never recovered. I did get my backpack and safe back though. They are going to have to pay for my new printer, and I can promise you it will cost more than $35 dollars.

Sometimes the justice system does work!

Good to hear that there are sometimes happy endings.:thu:

Thanks! As I type this my 13 year old daughter is walking across the street to babysit the neighbors kids for a awhile and your stepping up and doing what's right is in a small (but important way) going to make her and her 9 year old sister safer as they grow up around here!

I know it's not easy delivering the tough love but it works and it's the right thing to do. If it is their first offense they will be getting off easy enough anyway, our system works that way. Don't let the school try to sweep it under the rug for their own selfish reasons.

Where is Burberry street?

I am orignally from 29th ave. right across the street from Broadway at the Beach, but now obviously I live on campus.

Barberry, deadend street behind the western wear/boots place right off 501, north of the two schools and hospital. Lots of college kids in duplex rental homes...cars overturned during keg parties...can't see the asphalt on the street for all the red plastic cups and junk food wrappers the next morning....a real shining example from the future leaders of America lol.

Well this all depends if I want to press charges or not.

Here is where I am stuck, so I guess I will get your guys' opinions.

If I press charges they DO get expelled and the DO go to jail here in SC, which sucks for them because neither of them are from here.

But I really don't want to end up {censored}ing up their entire lives'.

On the other hand, I do believe they need to be punished more than just getting kicked out the doors and having to pay a few hundred bucks each.

I think they should be forced to BUY my amps since obviously wanted them.

Any other ideas?

You are WAY WAY WAY TOO KIND!!!

If it was me, I would DEMAND the state LOP OFF THEIR HEADS!!!

And to illutsrate how much their punishment would bother me, I'd probably go make a sandwich so I could have something to snack on while I watched them bleed out!!!

Steel from me, do not pass go. Go straight to oblivion.
