Flatwound strings..which guitar?

I was at Guitar Center and on a whim bought some flatwound strings (11's). I originally bought them for a semi hollow body I own, but started thinking that maybe they would be better on a LP style guitar....plus I have a Tele style coming next week sometime and maybe they'd be cool there.

Sooo, which guitar is a more natural fit for flatwounds?

Semi Hollowbody

LP style

Tele style

Strat style

I have flatwounds on my semi but I've been thinking of switching them to my LP because my semi-acoustic is really my #1 and favorite guitar so roundwounds would be more versatile on that one. I use the flatwounds only for Bg band comping so it's a little too bad to restrict my semi to that role.

Well they will dull down and warm the tone, so put them on whichever guitar you want to de-twang and increase the jazz tone. Often folks associate that with semi and hollow body guitars, but it's totally your choice.

I've used the Eric Johnson rollerwound strings and even that slight flattening has a very noticeable affect.

Tele. IMHO flatwounds on semis sound too tubby. The thinner/treblier sound of a tele really works with the warmer sound. But why not buy a couple more packs and try them on all your guitars? Easiest "mod" you can do to your setup.

What do you mean by 'tubby'?

A bit indistinct in the bass, overbearing mids. I have a hard time describing it exactly, but on a semi, there's something to the sound of flatwounds that always remind me of elastic bands, if that make sense.....it's that "dowwww" kinda sound to my ears.

then, my ears might be different that yours, so I still suggest you try them out for yourself

I have flats on my CIJ Jazzmaster and they sound really great. The mellowness really tamed the stratty pickups. Plus the greater tension (D'd Chromes) took care of any buzz at the bridge. Nice.

I was going to put flats on my Casino, but I kind of like the P-90 jangle so I went with half-wounds. They sound great too - a little mellow, very little finger-noise but still some jangle.

Flats are great for a mellow, clean jazz-like tone - Distorted I only really notice the lack of string noise.

They'll really really change your clean tone. Beware. It's like havinga different guitar.

I don't think tht I'd ever put them on a Tele though. I like the snap and twang too much.
