I bought a black Epi Moderne from Mars Music back in the day. I still

have it. It's still in original condition with its gold Gibson-USA humbuckers.

...Epiphone has had two versions -- they had the the Vintage series in 2000 that were sold exclusively through MARS (production is said to be 500 units) and then a cheapo bolt on version as a part of the E-Series in 2002.

The cheap-o bolt-on version was nothing like a "real" Moderne. That one

was part of the "Designer Collection" that included the Apollo, Comet, Futura,

and Slasher -- all of which were limited edition junk art guitars that cost a

bit more than they should have.

By the way, I played a couple of '80s Gibson Modernes in the past. The Epi

is maybe a slight bit lighter in weight. Also, I've yet to experience any tuning

problems with my Moderne. I simply stretch out the strings after string

replacement and that's been pretty much it. String replacement is only

slightly more involved than re-stringing a Strat/Tele. You can't slip a crank

string winder on a couple of the tuning pegs on the left side of the headstock

because of closeness, which is really the worst of it.

...nice companion to my Flying V and Les Paul. Plays comfortably sitting down as well and just feels incredible.

I own a Gibson '98 Flying V as well (beautiful glossy candy grape finish).

The Moderne is certainly a lot easier to play sitting down than the Flying V.
