Won't it depend on what style of music one plays or what type of tone you are after?

Okay, so here's another question:

If I were to ask for a good single coil, I would probably be looking for something apporoaching the original Fenders.

If I were asking about Humbuckers, probably looking for a PAF type of sound.

What am I looking for when I ask about P90's.

This is a serious question, and I'm not sure of the answer.

That should be our question. Why are you interested in a P90? Because they are trendy currently or because you think you like the tones that made P90s so famous? That's why I said "Gibson makes one". They created the P90 world for the most part.

A couple of reasons:

- I don't have a guitar with P90s. I've got HBs and SCs.

- Their recent 'trendiness,' or more specifically, the fact that they keep coming up in conversations here, have made me curious, and the tones that people point to as examples are tones I like.

I think I'm having a mental problem, though, in nailing that down. Like I said, I can sort of nail down the 'ground zero' of the other two types I mentioned, but I'm not sure what an 'iconic P90 sound' is, if one exists.

Ya, that's tough, especially by watching youtube videos. You are gatting the finished product of which a P90 was so far back in the signal change that it can be hard to hear their true original tone. Its a good way to hear where you can go with them and makes you realize that they are far from a 1-trick pony. Have you listened to any of the manufacturers pure clips to help out? Bryan has some pretty good ones.

Sounds good but I find a clip like that to be not helpful at all. Its a processed total rig tone.

I have that set, they are great pup's, ironically they are much less expensive from a dealer than bought directly. I do have to agree Tommy, the soundtrack is very studio. I would love to get my paws on a Robin guitar to check out though!:love::love:

Yep, when I bought my BBQs way back, they were far cheaper through Torres than from the actual company. I bought all mine on Ebay if I recall correctly.

There's not too many bad P-90s out there. The Epi ones are said to be craptacular, but I've heard lots of goods ones...even cheapies.

Their alnico model that they put in their Wildkats, Casinos, '56 Goltops, etc, are pretty good sounding pickups. The models that I like to avoid are the ones where the intent seemed to be "I don't like the original tone of a P90 but I want to offer a P90 to the consumer". The Harmonic Design and SD Phat Cats seem to be made that way.

I just cruised over to Lollar and checked it out.

Yeah, there's that tone.

I'd describe the neck as being a leaner HB sound, and the bridge as being a beefier tele tone.

I still can't describe it without comparing it to something else.

but I like it.

True dat. The ones in my Agile are okay but I'm not sure how much a desired improvement would happen if I replaced them. I like the guitar, I think, but I want something a little better. I like humbuckers best so I am not sure how much of what I am missing is I just would prefer humbuckers or if I would be happier with some higher quality P-90 pickups in it. THEN I start wondering not only what brand of pickup to upgrade to but whether I want mild, medium, or hot P-90. I am guessing that I would want a medium to hot style since I like to be able to hit the high gain when I need it.

To the OP...just letting you know I feel your pain of looking for a good P-90 guitar.

Vintage neck and medium-hot for the bridge is ideal for me.
