Musical Accuracy

Good day all,

I sat in with a band the other night at a casino, and sent them a note I'd like to sing keep your hands to yourself. All went pretty well I guess. Key seems off but I'm a drummer so I have no ideer if it was on or off and since I was singing I was not really privy to their monitors as I was in front of the monitors. No big deal, can hear it through pa or cup my ear. So I get done and since only one song I could really put a lot of energy into the projection of the voice cause I'm not setting up tearing down or wacking skins for 4 hours.

Then the guys says your not going anywhere, ok, so he's saying what other songs do you know...as they are filling the end of the songs with keyboard solos (which really didn't belong but oh well I'm not the musician right?) so I'm trying to get them to end on open note and flourish out and try to get an intro to another song. So he's asking what song I want, so for craps and giggles I asked any AC DC? oh yeah country band got it sorry man!

He gave me a funny look ummm so I said Mountain Music done it 1000 times no biggy, only problem was, it just didn't sound right, key was off, way off not sure what they were playing tempo seemed off and he had me start it with a 2 part vocal harmony which was fine until the guitar part came in, was WAY off, so I improvised one verse and attempted to get them to jump right into fishing in the dark cause I'm thinking everyone knows that one right? That one sounded kinda funny too and by that point ok breathe breathe running out of breath voice is starting to crack, anyhow Fishin in the dark did fill the floor and I thought well that's it voice is shot done I'm outa here and you guys have a full dance floor Thanks for the fun!....

I guess my question is where is the musical accurracy or are those just all hard songs to pull off? I know with guitars yall have pedals to try to recreate that songs sound, but for 50 different songs you would need 50 different pedals right?

And in the past I've had issues playing drums in bands because the guitar didn't sound right so if that didn't sound right just a bear to bang out that tempo correctly if it doesn't feel right cause to me music is all about soul, if I can't feel it I surely can't play it right?

Maybe my ears are too stereo mode I don't know....

If you want 'musical accuracy', then go to a karaoke bar.   Those things are spot on, most time.

Good bands aren't defined by how closely they cover some particular recorded version of a song or what key they play it in.

I don't know if these guys were any good or not--you didn't really say.  But if they weren't, playing closer to the record or in the 'right' key isn't going to make them better.  Although it MIGHT make them easier to sing along with, I suppose?

golly, that makes no sense to me. You have tempo problems because the guitar tone is different than the original?

Those guys probably just suck or aren't familiar with the songs/their parts.

Or possibly have horribly setup, out of tune guitars AND don't know their parts. Most guitar players need no more that 2 or 3 main sounds in a night. There are only so many standard "effects" you can really add to these base sounds to make them sound different, or in this case "official". (delay, phase, chorus, trem, reverb, phase shift etc)

Most guitar parts should be able to be pulled off on any guitar through any amp.

Also sounds like you need more of a monitor mix if you can't hear what the dudes you're playing with.

I suggest jamming with other musicians to see if you can find people who have "soul" instead of poop sounding playing.

Well, a lot of people playing in cover bands suck. Sounds like this was a disorganized mess. . . at a show. . . and you guys just agreed to do one song? And your voice was spent after singing two songs? Seems to me like everyone who was there might need to do a little more prep work.

No it was just a band, I was the bar patron. Been in bands in the past. You know they sure sounded better out front than it "seemed" to sound on stage, never the same sound is it? I mean I get that going from a top 40 pop tune to an old 60's tune, in a band scenario I use the same drums for both songs and I get that in a 1000 years I will never reproduce the purcussion tones of the original recording, I guess more of a rant than anything. I guess I better just stick to being retired from live music forever and keep jamming for fun.

Thank you for all yall's feedback

I'm having a hard time following what you are saying.  What I am getting out of your posts is you requested songs the band did not know how to play??

As for "Keep Your Hands To Yourself" and AC/DC songs (you didn't mention which one).... they are fairly straight forward and effects free.  The most important pedal there might be a tuner.

As for 50 pedals for 50 songs... it really depends on the material.  For cover band stuff I typically go with a clean sound, dirty sound, lead sound with a wah, microvibe/chorus effect, delay, and an od pedal or two (lead sound) for effects with a good guitar and amp. I feel I can convincingly cover stuff from the Police, Ozzy, Foo Fighters, Christina Aguillera, Albert King, Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Nirvana, Bruno Mars, Maroon 5, the Eagles, Garth Brooks, etc, etc.  I've played SRV or Hendrix stuff with a Les Paul and no one has commented that I have not been using single coils. It doesn't sound exact, but that's more of an issue with my playing ability than the equipment I am using.
